Are you a skilled Industrial Painter – Truck Driver looking for a long‑term, high‑profile project? At F.D. Thomas, we support essential infrastructure operations on the Oakland Bay Bridge, and we're seeking multi‑talented professionals who can safely drive, maintain equipment, and perform industrial coating work in a safety‑critical environment.

This hybrid role combines commercial driving, equipment maintenance, and industrial painting/blasting, making it ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic, hands‑on work and takes pride in producing quality results every night.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

This position supports nightly bridge operations and requires safely convoy‑driving onto the bridge, parking in designated areas, performing industrial coating work, maintaining equipment, and returning with the crew at the end of each shift.

Daily Routine:

  • Perform pre‑trip inspections at the laydown yard
  • Drive in convoy formation with crew and equipment onto the Oakland Bay Bridge
  • Park on the bridge and assist with nightly equipment and worksite setup
  • Perform industrial painting tasks
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor blasting and coating equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical or equipment issues during operations
  • Tear down equipment and convoy back to the yard after shift
  • Complete post‑trip inspections and required documentation

Key Responsibilities:

Driving & Transportation

  • Safely operate commercial trucks, trailers, and specialized vehicles
  • Transport materials, and equipment in compliance with CDL, DOT, and FDT standards
  • Follow strict convoy protocols for bridge access and departure

Industrial Painting & Blasting

  • Apply industrial coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment
  • Prepare surfaces through sanding, scraping, grinding, or blasting
  • Mix, handle, and apply coatings per project specifications
  • Monitor environmental conditions and coating cure times
  • Set up containment, tarps, and protective systems in accordance with environmental regulations
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work zone on the bridge deck

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Maintain readiness of trucks, blasting pots, compressors, pumps, and related equipment
  • Keep tools and machinery in proper working condition

Inspections & Compliance

  • Perform daily pre‑ and post‑trip inspections
  • Ensure compliance with DOT rules, Cal/OSHA requirements, environmental standards, and FDT safety protocols
  • Follow strict safety procedures while working at night in high‑traffic zones

Field Service Support

  • Conduct on‑site repairs during blasting or coating operations to minimize downtime

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate logs of inspections, repairs, coatings, mileage, and fuel usage

Required:

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL
  • Experience as an Industrial Painter or abrasive blaster in heavy industrial environments
  • Experience CDL driver is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, braking systems, and electrical systems
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, hand tools, and equipment
  • Understanding of surface preparation and industrial coating techniques
  • Ability to work safely in high‑traffic, high‑visibility environments such as active bridges
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and specifications
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and reliability

Union Requirement

If you are not already a member of the Allied Trades Painters Union, you will be required to join. Compensation is above union scale.
