Job description

SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Retail Business Counselor serves as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to independent retailers within an assigned territory. This role builds and maintains strong business relationships, drives profitable sales growth, and ensures AG New England’s programs, merchandising, and operational standards are executed effectively at store level. Acting as both consultant and coach, the Counselor helps retailers strengthen operations, enhance financial performance, and differentiate their stores in an increasingly competitive marketplace. MUST HAVE MERCHANDISING EXPERIENCE OR POG EXPERIENCE This position will cover the Brattleboro, NH, Keene, NH and Marlborough, NH area.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned retailers, providing guidance and solutions to improve store performance.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with owners and managers through consistent communication and follow-through.
  • Conduct purposeful store visits focused on merchandising execution, profitability, and customer experience.
  • Partner with internal AGNE teams to resolve service, pricing, and product issues quickly and effectively.
  • Identify opportunities to grow sales with existing accounts and recruit new independent grocers to the cooperative.
  • Lead onboarding and transition processes for new retailers, ensuring smooth integration of systems and services.
  • Support store remodels, resets, and grand openings as needed.
  • Achieve assigned sales, growth, and distribution objectives within the territory.
  • Collaborate with Category Management, Merchandising, and Marketing to align promotions and strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor and communicate competitive trends, market shifts, and opportunities to leadership.
  • Prepare and submit timely visit reports, insights, and follow-up actions.
  • Participate in meetings, planning sessions, and professional development programs.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required, bachelor’s degree in business or related field preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in retail or wholesale sales, account management, or business counseling.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence, coach, and build relationships.
  • Solid knowledge of retail operations, merchandising, and sales principles.
  • Analytical ability to interpret trends and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with reporting/dashboard tools (e.g., Power BI) preferred.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and result-driven with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and regular travel required within the assigned territory.
