JOB SUMMARY
To provide nursing care to patients of all ages, from newborn to elderly as demonstrated by the nursing process. Data collected will be pertinent to the age and developmental level of the patient. The Emergency Department Staff RN is accountable for the provision of quality patient care. The Staff RN utilizes the nursing process to provide quality care to department patients. Accepts responsibility for maintaining and improving professional skills essential to the area of clinical practice. Supports the hospital's Mission and Value Statement Philosophy through shared values and service excellency.
PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:
PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES
  1. NURSING PROCESS
    1. Demonstrates specific nursing skills required for unit as outlined in departmental performance checklist.
    2. Provides assessment, treatment, and/or care to varying age groups as identified in unit competency checklist.
    3. Utilizes the nursing process following established WhidbeyHealth policies, procedures, protocols and standards.
  1. PATIENT ASSESSMENT
    1. Obtains pertinent nursing history for all assigned patients, assesses patient's physical status, emotional needs, and strengths to determine basic nursing needs.
    2. Examines the patient and documents pertinent clinical findings.
    3. Consults with other persons or agencies in the assessment process (ie, family, nursing home, MD, MHP).
  1. PLANS PATIENT CARE BASED ON NEEDS ASSESSMENT
    1. Plans appropriate patient care and teaching as identified in assessment.
    2. Reviews laboratory data and procedural results.
    3. Begins discharge planning process upon admission and utilizes appropriate community and family resources.
  1. IMPLEMENTS CARE
    1. Safely and competently administers nursing care based on plan of care, following standard policies / procedures.
    2. Correctly interprets and executes medical staff orders for treatment in a timely manner.
    3. Participates in and supervises care of patient.
    4. Documents all care provided appropriately.
    5. Performs or delegates patient and family teaching according to plan.
  1. EVALUATES PATIENT CARE
    1. Reviews patient's status per department standards and protocols, adjusts care plan as needed.
    2. Evaluates patient's response to treatment.
    3. Communicates the patient's status, both physiological and behavioral, to appropriate multidisciplinary practitioners.
    4. Documents evaluation and outcomes, including condition at time of transfer on COBRA patients.

ACTIVITIES RELATED TO PATIENT CARE
  • Develops and maintains effective interpersonal relationship with patients, families, coworkers, medical staff, and other hospital personnel (see attached Peer Review).
  • Maintains confidentiality and patient's right to privacy.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Delegates to an ED tech work assignments and oversees their work to ensure consistent standards of patient care per Washington State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Participates in committees, meetings, and task forces for system improvements for quality patient care.
  • Participates in community education and service, ENCARE, health fairs, flu shot clinics, etc.
  • Documents follow-up contacts with patients via the department callback program.
MEETS EXPECTATIONS OF CO-WORKERS
  • Carries own weight and takes an equal share of the workload. Is able to maintain a smooth flow of patients.
  • Addresses problems with coworkers appropriately.
  • Supports coworkers by offering assistance when needed.
  • Provides a safe and clean environment; ensures availability of supplies and maintains equipment.
  • Treats patients and other personnel as customers, is polite and cooperative. Offers extra comfort measures to patients, keeps them informed of delays, provides privacy and explains procedures.
  • Capable of functioning under stressful situations.
  • Reports to work and is ready for report on time.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Adheres to the standards of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to hospital Mission Statement and ED Philosophy.
  • Mandatory in-services are at 100%.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects as assigned.
  • Attends staff meetings, trauma conferences and education / training.
  • Attends annual Skills Lab.
  • Demonstrates motivation for maintaining/improving professional competence.
  • Maintains certification in BLS and ACLS.
  • Unscheduled absences do not exceed 2.3%.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Education
  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Preferred: BSN
Training and Experience
  • Required: At least one year experience as an RN in hospital nursing, Emergency Department preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people. Capable of functioning effectively in stressful situations.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job to serve patients of all ages.
WA State Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Active WA State RN License or Active Multistate License (MSL)
  • MSL Requirements:
    • Approved 6-Hour Suicide Prevention Training Course Completion
    • Screenshot of submitted demographic data using the Washington State Multistate Nurse Demographic Data Survey.
  • BLS, ACLS, TNCC, & PALS required.
    • BLS required at hire.
    • ACLS required to be obtained within 90 days from hire date.
    • TNCC & PALS required to be obtained within one year from hire date.
