Job Summary This position is ESSENTIAL. During heating season, this position works on a rotating 8-hour swing shift. The Utility Plant Operator 1 performs semi-skilled work in the operation of boilers and related equipment.

An employee in this position operates boilers and maintains proper steam pressure and water levels in a generating plant and/or assists in the operation of electric generation equipment. Work involves keeping records of steam production and fuel consumption; making minor adjustments and repairs to boilers and equipment; monitoring boiler plant systems and reporting potential problems; and operating small steam engines of low horsepower used to drive fans and related equipment in a boiler plant. An employee in this job will receive directions from a Utility Plant Operator 2 and is supervised by a Utility Plant Supervisor or other trades supervisor who reviews work performance for compliance with instructions, procedures, and safe operations.

Minimum Qualifications 1 year as a Utility Plant Helper OR 1 year experience in cleaning & assisting in the operation, maintenance, & repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems & related equipment OR a combination of experience and training in this field Demonstrated knowledge of the operation of boiler plant systems & related equipment Knowledge of utility plant hazards and safety procedures Effective oral & written communication skills Preferred Qualifications 2 years' experience operating a gas-fired steam plant 2 years' experience as a Utility Plant Helper 2 years' experience performing semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance & repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems & related equipment Prior semi-skilled work in a higher education environment Supplemental Information Applications & resumes will be accepted until the position is filled. The starting salary for this position is $36,831.00, based on the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position may be eligible for a flexible hybrid work arrangement, permitting a combination of on-site and remote work, subject to applicable organizational policies, operational requirements, and supervisory approval
