Job description

Company Description Upgrade Resources is a boutique executive recruiting firm that connects high-caliber professionals with key salaried roles in plant operations, HR, supply chain, and revenue-generating functions. With more than 40 years of combined experience in external agency recruiting and internal corporate talent acquisition, the team offers a strategic and consultative approach to hiring. The firm emphasizes personalized, high-touch service, focusing on understanding both client needs and candidate career goals. Upgrade Resources is committed to making placements that are a strong long-term fit, supporting professional growth and organizational success.

Role Description The Startup Manager will lead the planning, execution, and finalization of startup and commissioning support across all construction projects, ensuring delivery meets high standards for safety, schedule, budget, and quality. This individual will create detailed startup plans for mechanical and plumbing equipment and systems on commercial, industrial, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing projects. Responsibilities include reviewing project plans, specifications, and equipment submittals to build project-specific startup and commissioning plans, coordinating schedules with project management teams, vendors, and subcontractors, and proactively identifying potential construction problems and cost-saving measures. The Startup Manager will also lead job cost breakdowns, schedule of values, and billing review, while supervising and developing the startup technician team.

Ideal candidates are hands-on leaders with deep commercial mechanical or plumbing construction experience, proven success managing project startup and commissioning at scale, and the ability to balance technical precision with operational coordination across multiple concurrent projects.

Qualifications

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship as sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Background with a commercial mechanical or plumbing contractor required; GC-side, owner's rep, industrial-only, and residential backgrounds do not qualify.
  • 10+ years of experience on commercial mechanical or plumbing construction projects, including healthcare, medical gas, educational, institutional, military, and others.
  • Experience leading direct reports required.
  • Experience with project Testing, Balancing, and Commissioning teams.
  • Startup and commissioning of projects ranging in size and scope from $25M or greater preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
