Job description

Empyrean Solutions Product Manager – Balance Sheet Risk Solutions Focus area — Asset/Liability Management (Empyrean ALM) About the Role

Empyrean’s Balance Sheet Risk Solutions vertical is anchored by our flagship asset/liability management platform, Empyrean ALM, and its modules, alongside Empyrean Model IQ (our customer-behavior analysis platform) and Empyrean Liquidity Manager (currently in development). Each product is owned by a dedicated product manager.

We’re looking for a hands‑on Product Manager to own Empyrean ALM. This is our most established and deeply adopted product in the vertical. You’ll own the ALM roadmap and backlog end to end. You will work directly with CFOs, treasurers, ALM managers, and analysts at banks and credit unions to understand how they run interest rate risk, funds transfer pricing, and ALCO reporting to turn that understanding into a product that keeps getting sharper and reaches further up‑market over time.

Empyrean ALM is a mature, feature‑rich application with a large customer base, so the work is less about launching something brand new and more about defining precise requirements, partnering closely and continuously with the ALM engineering team, and shipping meaningful improvements each release. Your vast customer and user base is your primary instrument throughout. They are the primary source of discovery, the foundation that keeps delivery anchored to real workflows, and the means of validating what you ship.

This role calls for someone who thrives on customer engagement, has the technical depth to partner effectively with engineering on a complex calculation and data‑intensive platform, and can translate the nuance of balance sheet risk into clear, buildable requirements. This is strategic product management, not project management- we need someone who discovers problems, validates solutions, and drives outcomes, not someone who manages timelines.

What You’ll Do Customer Discovery & Insight
  • Use Empyrean’s large ALM customer base and active user community as your primary engine for discovery. You will be responsible for running interviews, shadowing ALM managers and analysts, and testing usability firsthand rather than reviewing second‑hand findings.

  • Uncover the jobs‑to‑be‑done and underlying needs across the full ALM workflow: current‑position data and reconciliation, chart of accounts and consolidation, scenario and shock design, NII/EVE and gap analytics, funds transfer pricing, and ALCO and regulatory reporting.

  • Build a deep, working understanding of how financial institutions actually manage balance sheet risk: the IRR policy and limit framework, the ALCO cadence, model governance and audit trail, and examiner expectations.

  • Help guide Empyrean ALM up‑market using discovery to understand what the largest, most complex tier‑1 institutions need from the platform.

  • Translate what you learn into a prioritized, validated roadmap with clear requirements the engineering team can act on.

Requirements & Delivery
  • Own the Empyrean ALM roadmap and backlog end‑to‑end from discovery through detailed requirements, delivery, enhancement, and optimization of the product and its modules.

  • Write clear, precise functional requirements for complex financial calculations and workflows.

  • Work directly and continuously with the ALM engineering team. This includes grooming the backlog, clarifying requirements, making feature‑level trade‑offs, and unblocking delivery.

  • Partner with engineering on architecture, data models, and calculation‑engine trade‑offs; bring the customer and business context, and let engineering own the implementation.

  • Keep delivery anchored to real customer workflows, and use your customer and user relationships to validate that what ships actually solves the problem.

Cross‑Functional Leadership
  • Influence without authority across engineering, sales, customer success, professional services, and executive stakeholders.

  • Communicate the roadmap, priorities, and trade‑offs clearly to very different audiences including engineers, executives, and sophisticated ALM practitioners.

  • Collaborate with product marketing and sales on positioning, enablement, and demand generation for Empyrean ALM.

  • Operate within a growing product organization as we scale a large, highly integrated solution suite.

Continuous Improvement
  • Use product usage data and continuous user feedback to prioritize enhancements and drive adoption across a large installed base.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce complexity and continuously add value to the user base.

  • Balance new capability against technical debt, performance, and accuracy and integrity of the platform’s calculations.

What You Bring Required Experience
  • 5+ years of product management experience in B2B SaaS or enterprise software.

  • A proven track record of shipping complex products that customers actually use and value.

  • Direct, hands‑on customer discovery experience. You personally conduct research, not just review findings from others.

  • Demonstrated strength defining detailed functional requirements for complex, calculation‑or data‑heavy software.

  • Strong technical aptitude - comfortable discussing system architecture, data models, APIs, and integration patterns with engineering teams.

  • Experience working with enterprise buyers and navigating complex stakeholder environments.

  • A demonstrated ability to set roadmap strategy and make sound prioritization decisions under constraints.

Preferred Background
  • Experience with asset/liability management, interest rate risk, bank/credit union treasury or closely analogous experience in another highly regulated, quantitatively complex industry (for example, insurance, capital markets, or another financial‑services risk domain).

  • A grasp of financial accounting concepts (balance sheets, income statements, cashflows, yields, etc.).

  • Familiarity with the Jobs‑to‑be‑Done framework and other structured discovery methodologies.

  • A track record of optimizing and extending a mature, established product - not only 0→1 builds.

Critical Attributes
  • Customer‑centric mindset: You’re energized by talking to ALM practitioners and digging into their workflows to find the real problems.

  • Problem decomposition: You dig past surface‑level requests to the underlying problem, then structure solutions into manageable pieces that can be sequenced and delivered incrementally.

  • Requirements craftsmanship: You turn nuanced, messy financial workflows into clear, precise, testable requirements engineers can build from.

  • Hands‑on executor: You do the work yourself — discovery, requirements, prioritization, backlog grooming — rather than delegating it.

  • Clear communicator: You can explain complex topics to different audiences without losing the thread.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity: You can drive forward without perfect information.

  • Strategic thinker: You articulate trade‑offs, defend decisions with logic, and connect tactical work to business outcomes.

  • Learning mindset: You can discuss specific failures, what you learned, and how you’ve applied those lessons.

Not a Fit If You:
  • Prefer to delegate customer research to specialists rather than doing it yourself.

  • Focus primarily on strategy and vision without hands‑on execution and detailed requirements work.

  • See product management as managing timelines and tickets rather than discovering problems, validating solutions, and driving outcomes.

  • Need extensive structure and guidance to operate effectively.

  • Struggle to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely.

This role reports to the Product Director, Balance Sheet Risk Solutions. You’ll have significant autonomy to own the strategy and backlog for the ALM product. You will collaborate with a growing product team and work shoulder to shoulder with the ALM engineering team every day.
