Job description

What to Expect:

United Ground Express (UGE) is seeking a motivated Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Journeyman Mechanic to support GSE operations at Denver International Airport (DEN). This role is designed for mechanics who are developing toward advanced GSE technical expertise and will focus primarily on preventative maintenance (PM) and light to moderate repairs.The Journeyman Mechanic will work closely with senior GSE technicians, receiving hands-on training and mentorship to build skills in advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and complex repairs. This position offers a clear development pathway while supporting safe and reliable GSE operations in a demanding airport environment.

How you will make an impact

  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) inspections and services on a variety of GSE
  • Complete light to moderate repairs under established procedures and guidance
  • Assist senior technicians with advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and complex repairs as part of a structured training program
  • Safely operate, test, and return GSE to service following maintenance or repair
  • Learn and apply troubleshooting techniques for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems
  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the maintenance management system
  • Read and interpret repair manuals, work instructions, and basic electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Communicate equipment status and maintenance findings to supervisors and senior technicians
  • Work outdoors in varied and extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, snow, and rain
  • Follow all company, airport, and safety policies, including proper PPE usage
  • Participate in required safety, technical, and developmental training
  • Support other GSE shops or stations during occasional travel assignments
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of DEN operation

What you will bring:

Experience/Competencies

  • 1 year of experience as a heavy, medium, or light-duty mechanic or equivalent mechanical role
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills with willingness to learn advanced systems
  • Ability to read and understand basic electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Must possess own set of basic hand tools common to the trade
  • Ability to work non-traditional schedules, including weekends and holidays
  • Understanding of general workplace and equipment safety procedures
  • Ability to operate power tools and various types of GSE
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support other GSE shops or stations
  • Ability to pass all DEN airport security, background, and drug screening requirements

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Previous experience in an airport or GSE environment
  • Exposure to preventative maintenance programs and inspection-based maintenance
  • Entry-level hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical troubleshooting experience
  • State and/or ASE certifications in automotive or diesel repair preferred
  • Experience using a CMMS (Fleet Focus preferred)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams, and PowerPoint
  • Strong desire to advance to higher-level GSE mechanic roles

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required

  • Must possess the ability to:
    • lift up to 70 lbs. on a consistent basis
    • stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods
    • work in tight or elevated spaces using appropriate PPE
    • operate heavy equipment, power tools, and motor vehicles
    • work outdoors in all weather conditions
    • use computers and maintenance systems for documentation and reporting
