Job description

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signaling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time Mechanical Traction Design Engineer in West Mifflin, PA, US we’re looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your mechanical engineering expertise in a cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside collaborative and innovative teammates worldwide. You'll contribute to the development and Mechanical Integration of Traction System Products (Traction & Auxiliary Converters, and High Voltage Boxes) and related maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with quality, cost, and delivery (QCD) commitments. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (such as Procurement, Industrialization, Quality, and Manufacturing), conduct and participate in design reviews, support continuous improvement initiatives—and much more.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Performing 3D modeling, preparing technical documents, providing design annotations, and creating 2D deliverables in compliance with QCD commitments and established processes.
  • Modeling equipment in alignment to allocated volumes and interfaces for traction and auxiliary products.
  • Conducting detailed design on internal subsystems.
  • Requirement management and ensuring compliance with requirements such as allocated volumes, weight, interfaces, and applicable industry standards.
  • Preparing documentation for Design Reviews and supporting Project Design Gates.
  • Checking the quality of detailed design documentation, drawings, and subcontractors' designs.
  • Realizing and maintaining the Engineering Bill of Material.
  • Planning and leading Mechanical Design activities for assigned projects, ensuring deliverables adhere to customer and project requirements.

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (mandatory).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in traction mechanical engineering (transportation industry desired).
  • Knowledge of 3D/2D CAD software, such as AutoCAD, and Catia V5 (knowledge of Catia V5 is mandatory).
  • Familiarity with MS Office tools.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with third parties (e.g., customers, sub-contractors).
  • Resilience and adaptability to work in a dynamic engineering environment.
  • Time management and multitasking skills.
  • Structured and organized with a hands-on approach.
  • Ability to analyze and implement change requests.
  • Capable of working cross-functionally with project core teams.
  • Experience and willingness to work with global teams, levering expert-level support at other traction design sites.
  • English proficiency for reading, writing, and participating in technical meetings.

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues.
  • Work with innovative 3D/2D CAD tools such as AutoCAD, and Catia V5 to design and integrate mechanical traction products for different rolling stock vehicles.
  • Progress towards becoming a key contributor to cutting-edge transportation solutions while continuously improving your technical and leadership skills.
  • Utilize our collaborative and structured working environment that fosters resilience, adaptability, and a continuous learning mindset.
  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries.
  • Contribute to innovative projects.
  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognizes your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, 401k).

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!

Important to note

As a global business, we’re an equal-opportunity employer that celebrates diversity across the 63 countries we operate in. We’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace for everyone.
