Salary:
The annual salary for this position ranges from $80,000 - $115,000 and varies based on specific responsibilities and geographic location. Starting annual salary within this range will be determined based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and/or skillset.
Summary:
Signode fabricates and sells consumables and automation equipment used to pack, bundle, unitize, warehouse, and transport goods. The Innovation, Research, and Development team for automation and packaging technologies (APT) develops new products, tests them, and launches them to market. We are growing, and we need additional engineers to expand our capabilities and capacity for new developments.
The incumbent Mechanical Engineer will conceptualize, design, detail, build, test, and document various updated and new automation equipment products, including equipment used for strapping, case handling, packing, unitizing, and warehouse automation.
Essential Functions:
  • Design automation equipment to achieve product requirements.
  • Apply mechanical engineering theory such as structural, dynamic, and thermal analysis.
  • Create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Submit engineering change orders and assist with technical documentation.
  • Build and test prototypes. This position is hands-on.
  • Select mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical components.
  • Evaluate and optimize designs for safety, reliability, and cost.
  • Maintain, promote, and enhance a safe work environment.
  • Travel to customer sites (10%) to learn the industry, participate in requirements solicitation, and troubleshoot problems with new equipment deployments.
  • Collaborate with product managers and customers to understand market requirements and establish product requirements.
  • Communicate with suppliers, assemblers, service personnel, management, and applications engineers to transition new products from prototype into full production.
  • Develop test plans.
  • Contribute to the development of standard work processes.
  • Conceptualize and pursue intellectual property related to new products.
  • Bias towards collaboration and teamwork to solve multidisciplinary problems.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers and take responsibility for the quality of work completed by a team.
  • Comfortable performing different types of tasks at different stages of a project.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • An associate degree in automation with suitable work experience will be considered

Experience:
  • 5+ years' experience designing equipment (experience designing automation or packaging equipment is a plus).
  • Detail-oriented and conscientious when designing, detailing, and testing.
  • Understanding manufacturing techniques, including sheet metal forming, machining, welding, surface treatments, and 3D printing.
  • Ability to explain design concepts and solicit feedback from colleagues and customers.
  • Ability to independently identify and resolve safety and reliability risks.
  • Bias towards collaboration and teamwork to solve multidisciplinary problems.
  • Comfortable performing different types of tasks at different stages of a project.
