Description Join the dynamic and passionate Financial Operations Division of the Financial and Management Services Department as their next Senior Accountant. We're seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Accountant who is ready to make a significant impact. THE OPPORTUNITY The Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in ensuring the financial integrity of the City by overseeing complex accounting functions, detailed financial analysis, and comprehensive budget operations.

This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with governmental regulations and standards, preparing accurate financial reports, and conducting thorough audits. By providing in-depth fiscal analysis, the Senior Accountant supports informed decision-making across various departments. As a key financial resource, the Senior Accountant leads significant projects, mentors junior staff, and collaborates with department heads to streamline and enhance financial operations.

Their expertise in advanced accounting practices ensures precise reporting and strategic budgeting, while also effectively managing special funds. In addition to these responsibilities, the Senior Accountant maintains and oversees the financial records and systems critical for operational and financial planning. This includes reviewing, monitoring, and reconciling assigned accounts, programs, and activities, thus ensuring financial accuracy and reliability.

MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field; OR, equivalent related work experience; AND A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a City or governmental agency. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Senior Accountant is the advanced professional journey-level classification of the finance/accounting job family that serves as an experienced resource to City managers and staff.

This class performs professional accounting and financial work ranging from moderate difficulty to complex. Assignments require professional judgment and thorough knowledge of accounting principles and financial management practices. A Senior Accountant may be assigned lead responsibility for cross-functional projects and may guide the work of lower-level professional and technical accounting staff.

Senior Accountant is distinguished from Accountant in that employees in the former class perform more complex accounting and analyses of greater significance and impact on the operations and management of the City. ABOUT THE FINANCIAL & MANAGEMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT The Financial & Management Services Department manages the City's finances and safeguards its assets.

We provide a wide range of support services to other City departments including budget coordination; financial reporting; payroll; billing and accounts receivable; purchasing and central stores; accounts payable; cash management and investing; business licensing and cashiering; technology services including network administration and security, enterprise systems and database administration, geographic information systems, backbone infrastructure and telecommunications; and maintenance service for all City facilities. Candidates will respond to a series of standardized questions, and their performance will be assessed using predetermined evaluation criteria to ensure a fair and consistent appraisal process. Eligible List: Once the appraisal is complete, HR will establish an eligible list of candidates.
