Senior Director of Finance & Operations - Nonprofit Sector
About the Role

This position serves as the executive financial leader for a national nonprofit organization. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Senior Director of Finance & Operations provides strategic direction across financial planning, budgeting, grants management, compliance, organizational risk, and operational infrastructure.

The Senior Director acts as a key strategic partner to executive leadership and the Board of Directors, translating complex financial data into actionable insights for a remote, mission-driven team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Strategy & Executive Advisory: Lead short- and long-term financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and scenario modeling; present financial reports and strategic recommendations to the COO, executive leadership, and the Board of Directors.

  • Accounting & Grant Management: Direct accounting operations, internal controls, cash flow management, annual audits, and IRS Form 990 filings; oversee grant budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance for donor-restricted funds.

  • Team Supervision: Directly supervise, coach, and develop the Senior Accountant, cultivating a service-oriented culture within the finance and operations team.

  • Operational Infrastructure & Risk: Collaborate with the COO to strengthen organizational systems, technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, payroll, benefits administration, vendor management, and legal risk mitigation.

  • External Relations & Affiliated Entities: Manage partnerships with banking, audit, tax, and legal providers; ensure financial oversight and regulatory compliance across affiliated non-profit or political entities as applicable.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, including staff supervision and leading finance functions.

  • Expertise in nonprofit accounting (GAAP), internal controls, cash flow management, grant accounting, and audit oversight.

  • Proven ability to present financial data and strategic models to executive leaders and boards of directors.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Work environment capability: Remote work within the continental United States, with eligibility to work without visa sponsorship.

  • Ability to travel for required in-person organizational retreats (1–2 times per year) and key meetings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA certification or a Master’s degree (MBA, MSA, or related field).

  • Experience managing multi-entity financial structures, such as 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), or Political Action Committees (PACs), including IRS and FEC compliance.

  • Background supporting civil society, public policy, center-right networks, or climate and energy advocacy organizations.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary Range: $150,000 – $180,000 per year

  • Work Location: 100% Remote (Must reside in the continental United States) & willing to work 9-5 EST schedule
