Job description

Position Overview

The Mechanical Project Manager is responsible for leading the successful execution of commercial mechanical construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role oversees all aspects of project management including budgeting, scheduling, subcontractor coordination, procurement, and client communication, with projects focused on HVAC and plumbing systems.

Projects may include commercial office buildings, healthcare facilities, laboratories, data centers, manufacturing facilities, education campuses, and institutional developments, requiring strong coordination between field operations, engineering, and prefabrication teams. The ideal candidate has experience working for a mechanical contractor and brings a strong background in either HVAC or plumbing construction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage mechanical construction projects from preconstruction through final closeout.
  • Oversee scopes involving HVAC systems, plumbing systems, piping, sheet metal, and mechanical equipment installations.
  • Develop and maintain project budgets, cost tracking, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Create and manage detailed project schedules to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, fabrication teams, and field personnel to maintain project productivity and quality.
  • Manage project documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, and contracts.
  • Collaborate closely with Superintendents and field teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Coordinate procurement of long-lead mechanical equipment and materials.
  • Participate in preconstruction activities including estimating, constructability reviews, and value engineering.
  • Lead project meetings and maintain communication with owners, architects, engineers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure projects comply with safety standards, project specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Identify project risks and implement solutions to maintain schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Support project closeout activities including punch lists, commissioning, and turnover documentation.

Qualifications
  • 5–10+ years of experience as a Project Manager in mechanical construction.
  • Strong experience managing HVAC and/or plumbing construction projects.
  • Experience working for a mechanical contractor or MEP contractor.
  • Proven ability to manage projects from start to finish (full lifecycle).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems including HVAC equipment, piping systems, ductwork, plumbing systems, and controls coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, BIM models, and contracts.
  • Experience coordinating field operations, fabrication, and project schedules.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced construction environments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with design-build mechanical projects and prefabrication workflows.
  • Experience on projects within healthcare, laboratories, data centers, education, manufacturing, or technology sectors.
  • Familiarity with BIM/VDC coordination and clash detection processes.
  • Proficiency with construction management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred.
