We believe electricity powers modern life. As part of our Power sector, you'll help shape how electricity is generated, transmitted and delivered as global energy demands grow. From massive data centers to modernizing transmission systems, our industry-recognized engineers and scientists have been at the forefront of grid transformation for more than a century. You'll work side-by-side with these experts and contribute to reliable, resilient and sustainable power systems, helping communities thrive and industries expand. This isn't just a job, it's a chance to drive infrastructure forward, power innovation and leave your mark on our energy future.
HDR is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Power Generation team. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, IPP, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors.
Preferred candidates will have a working knowledge of industrial- and utility-scale power generation systems as required to carry out the typical job duties which include: mechanical equipment/pipe sizing; equipment/piping layout considerations; construction document development (P&IDs, system layout/installation drawings and specifications); engineer/equipment vendor submittal reviews, vendor/contractor communications; technical writing (reports, procurement specifications, etc.); code reviews; site visits; project planning; and working within an assigned budget and schedule. Significant experience with the design and specification of power generation fluid systems including steam, condensate, fuel gas, cooling water, compressed air, and similar systems is preferred.
The candidate will be encouraged and trained to develop from a mechanical or lead engineer to a project engineer and ultimately into a project manager or engineering manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines. The candidate will be expected to share the benefits of his or her experience with others, including the mentoring of less experienced engineers. Communication and leadership skills as required to direct a small team of engineers and designers are also desired.
The position will require travel for site surveys, technical conferences, client meetings and monitoring of construction. Travel is typically less than 10%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • 5+ years of experience, ideally in the fossil power industry with a blend of design and field projects.
  • P.E. license in Texas or ability to obtain reciprocity.
  • Be able to coordinate their work with others; have good communication, written, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Attention to accuracy, detail orientated, self-directed learning, meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking are also required.
  • Willing to mentor EITs

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture

What We Believe
HDR is our company. Together, we build on each other's life experiences and perspectives to make great things possible every day. This shapes our collaborative culture, encourages organizational trust and connects us closer to the clients and communities we serve.
Our Commitment
As employee owners, we all have a role in creating an inclusive environment where each of us is welcomed, valued, respected and empowered to bring our authentic selves to work every day.
Our eight Employee Network Groups (Asian Pacific, Black, Hispanic/Latino(a), LGBTQ+, People with Disabilities, Veterans, Women, Young Professionals) help create a sense of belonging and foster a supportive environment where everyone is empowered to engage and contribute. Each group has an executive sponsor and is open to all employees.
