Job description

General Definition of Work This role involves performing routine field work to read water meters, which is necessary for preparing water and sewer bills. As part of this job, you will visit both homes and businesses to locate and record meter readings. These readings will then be passed on to the Customer Service Manager, who will use them to prepare utility bills.

This work will be done under the moderate supervision Customer Service Manager. Essential Functions Develop and train other staff to be able to work in the absence of this position. Perform customer service duties by reading residential and commercial water meters on different routes throughout the county for billing purposes.

Record all consumption usage at each location using a hand-held computer. Operate a motor vehicle on assigned routes,frequentlygetting in and out of the vehicle and walking to water meters. Place door hangers to inform customers of service changes or usage.

Identifywater meter equipment problems and perform minor water meter maintenance. Conduct re-reads on residential and commercial water meters throughout the County to verify readings, addresses, meter numbers, or changes in usage. Conduct route maintenance to includelocatingmeters, removing debris, painting road markers, and replacing meter covers orboxesas necessary.

Conduct inspections on valves required by Pender County Utilities and Pender County Inspections Department at various locations throughout the County to activate water service. Install new or remove old meters as assigned. Turn delinquent accounts off and on.

Observe the condition of meters andidentifyleaks, unsafe conditions, or unauthorized use of water and reportimmediatelyto the Field Operations Manager. Deliver exceptional, courteous, and efficient customer service to all Pender County customers and employees. Provide clear and precise information concerning each District's regulations governing service when necessary.

Perform other duties or tasks as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience The ideal candidate should have knowledge of customer service, safe work practices, safe driving practices, and general operational characteristics of water meters. They should be able to read different types of water meters, interpret street maps, resolve customer disputes, and work independently in the absence of supervision.

The minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma or GED, and two years of experience interacting with other employees or the public to provide accurate attention to detail and adherence to procedures or standards. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. Preferably possess NCDOT Flagger certification or can obtain it within 12 months of employment.

This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy. Physical Requirements This job involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis, up to 25 pounds of forcefrequently, and occasionally up to 50 pounds of force.

You will need to be able to speak or hear, climb, stand, walk, and perform repetitive motions as part of your regular duties. Effective vocal communication will berequiredto express or exchange ideas through spoken words. You should also have normal hearing ability to perceive information at spoken word levels and visual acuity to prepare and analyze written or computer data, use measuring devices, andoperatemotor vehicles or equipment.

Accuracy and thoroughness in your work are essential, as well as the ability toobservegeneral surroundings and activities. This job may expose you to various environmental conditions, both inside and outside.
