Job description

Description:

The Transportation and Safety Manager coordinates transportation and related health and safety operations across program sites. This role oversees schedules, records, vendors, supplies, emergency preparedness, and individualized safety planning; supervises assigned transportation staff; and supports compliance with Head Start and agency requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily routes, schedules, seating charts, passenger logs, attendance records, field trips, service changes, and cancellations.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the contracted transportation provider and address service or safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain child safety seats, emergency transportation backpacks, required rescue-medication procedures, and transportation supply inventories.
  • Develop individualized transportation safety plans with the Director of Health and Safety, families, and relevant departments.
  • Schedule and document emergency bus evacuation drills at least three times per year and ensure required logs and safety checks are completed.
  • Supervise the Bus Monitor and other assigned staff, including scheduling, onboarding, coaching, training, and performance feedback.
  • Audit health data and follow-up needs; maintain accurate health and transportation records, health care plans, and consent forms in GoEngage.
  • Prepare family follow-up communications, track screening equipment service dates, order health supplies, and support wellness initiatives and department training.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in health services, early childhood education, human services, business administration, transportation operations, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • At least two years of related experience in health, safety, transportation, early childhood, or human-services operations.
  • Prior supervisory experience and the ability to coordinate staff, schedules, and workflows.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification—or the ability to obtain certification within the required time frame.
  • Strong organization, record keeping, data-audit, communication, and follow-through skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic record keeping systems, email, spreadsheets, and standard office applications.
  • Ability to complete required background checks, health requirements, and job-related training; valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record if driving is assigned.

Preferred

  • Experience in Head Start or another early childhood program.
  • Training or certification in child passenger safety, medication administration, blood pressure measurement, or school transportation safety.

What Success Looks Like

You are reliable, safety-minded, detail-oriented, and comfortable balancing people leadership with hands-on operations. You communicate clearly, build respectful relationships with staff and families, maintain accurate records, and act quickly when concerns arise.

Physical Requirements

The role includes light to moderate physical activity, transportation safety checks, emergency drills, child safety-seat installation, routine lifting of supplies, workstation use, and travel between program and transportation settings.
