Job description

Basic Function: Sets up, runs, and monitors Cabler/Strander/Rework Line equipment used for the manufacture of fiber optic cable.

Significant Responsibilities:

I. Performs specific job responsibilities following safety procedures and guidelines: 

  • Reads the set-up sheet and utilizes the product code to determine the product to be manufactured, machine adjustments, and material requirements.
  • Sets up, runs, and monitors the Planetary Strander for all standard and nonstandard products.
  • Sets up and runs a respooling machine located in the cabling area to respool sub cables, fillers, and wire. 
  • Observes, measures, and inspects products at various stages of the production process to ensure the product is being produced per proper set-up sheet specifications.
  • Correctly completes all documentation specific to this job function.
  • Cleans equipment to prevent contamination as required.
  • Recognizes various defects and problems that arise during production. Assists in solving problems or notifies supervisor if required.
  • Runs the rework line when the workload at the Strander allows including washing cables with E Cleaner or MEK, printing cables, stripping cables, respooling cables, wire, and fillers, and using the stripping wheel to strip armor and FRP cables.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and six months of related experience and/or training preferred.

Essential Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: Mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate a machine in a production environment. Demonstrated ability to use tools and measuring devices properly. Ability to read and follow basic instructions and to understand and implement quality procedures. Math and handwriting skills required and the ability to correctly complete all documentation. Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Pays close attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments accurately and recognize and help resolve problems. Ability to operate a forklift. Ability to operate a hoist. 

Working Conditions: While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs. Significant inspecting activities require manual dexterity using hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. This job requires sight sufficient for significant reading and computer usage. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. This work also requires an individual with hearing sufficient for detecting alarms and communication with coworkers. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles. Shift Differential: Eligible night and weekend shifts receive an additional 10% shift differential.

Additional Compensation InformationThe posted pay range reflects the established base salary or hourly wage range for this position. Individual compensation is determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, internal equity, and business needs. New hires are typically hired below the midpoint of the range. Eligible positions may receive applicable shift differentials, skill premiums, or other forms of additional compensation.


The regular schedule for this position is 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Monday - Thursday with some schedule flexibility required; overtime is also available.
