Job description

Position: Grounds and Fleet Technician

Status: Full time, permanent

Location: Various sites within the Ohio History Connection site system

Compensation: $21-23/hour plus full benefits package

Summary:

The Grounds and Fleet Technician is responsible for maintaining grounds across Central Ohio and supporting the Ohio History Connection's vehicle and equipment fleet.

This position combines hands-on groundskeeping duties to ensure safe, functional, and visually appealing facilities with preventative fleet management and equipment maintenance.

Essential Functions:

Groundskeeping & Facilities Maintenance

  • Perform general groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, edging, planting, pruning, and landscape maintenance
  • Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in accordance with safety standards
  • Maintain walkways, parking lots, roads, and outdoor areas to ensure safety and accessibility
  • Remove snow, ice, debris, and waste from site grounds and public areas as needed

Fleet & Equipment Management

  • Maintain and manage organization-wide vehicle and equipment fleet, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and cleaning
  • Purchase parts, tools, supplies, and chemicals for fleet and maintenance operations

Operational & Support Duties

  • Support seasonal grounds maintenance and winter weather response at central sites
  • Service and repair groundskeeping equipment (mowers, tractors, etc.)
  • Coordinate with vendors for specialized services such as tree work, mulching, or snow removal
  • Travel to and support statewide sites with maintenance and grounds needs

Required Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3–4 years of experience in fleet maintenance, automotive repair, groundskeeping, or related field
  • Combination of technical training and hands-on experience preferred

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Comfortable communicating with staff and the public.
  • Knowledge of automotive repair and preventive maintenance practices
  • Experience with commercial landscaping equipment operation and repair
  • Ability to learn and use various office software suites to perform essential functions of position
  • Knowledge of proper operation and safety procedures for equipment necessary to perform essential functions such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and other commercial landscape and maintenance equipment
  • Understanding of safe handling and usage of materials necessary to perform essential functions of position including commercial-grade cleaning and sanitizing solutions, herbicides, and pesticides
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License

Physical Demands:

Requires prolonged standing, walking, and bending. Requires frequent lifting up to 75 pounds. Required eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate groundskeeping and landscaping equipment along with basic hand and power tools. Requires normal range of hearing and vision.
