Job description

Summary

The Clinical Medical Director directly reports to the Chief of Primary Care / ACOS and is responsible for all aspects of medical care delivered to patients assigned to a Patient Aligned Care Team at the Main Medical Center Campus or requested CBOC.

Qualifications
  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens only when no qualified citizens can be recruited).
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a VA‑approved school.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Faculty status may require board certification.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) are eligible while enrolled in an approved residency program, provided they hold a full license and are appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience: Supervisory experience.
  • Board certified or eligible in Family or Internal Medicine (American Board of Family Medicine or American Board of Internal Medicine).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable.
  • Physical and mental/sensory requirements per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 (e.g., standing, walking, reasoning, hearing, speaking, writing, reading, logical thinking).
Duties
  • Perform all services required in the practice of Internal Medicine within the VA system and document appropriately in the electronic record.
  • Provide educational experiences to primary‑care team members including fellows, residents, medical students, social work interns, physician assistants, nursing students, and utilization management personnel.
  • Participate in all required utilization management/quality management activities to monitor preadmission screening and utilization performance measures.
  • Provide or assist primary‑care providers with evaluation and treatment of Internal Medicine patients and participate in corrective actions for untoward responses.
  • Apply accepted protocols for assessment of patients with various medical conditions per community and VA standards.
  • Arrange appropriate follow‑up care for patients after scheduled appointments.
  • Represent Primary Care at hospital administrative and patient‑care meetings; review protocols, procedures, and expectations for transported/transferred patients.
  • Monitor established VA/VISN/Joint Commission performance measures and provide feedback to improve outcomes.
  • Regularly meet with Internal Medicine providers and nursing staff to discuss performance and barriers, and develop solutions using LEAN principles.
  • Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
