Job description

Who We Are

As science and technology increasingly shape our lives, the Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change. Among the world's largest science centers and New England's most attended cultural institution, we engage nearly five million people a year - at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online.

The Museum's singular location connecting Boston and Cambridge puts us at the junction of some of the world's most influential academic institutions and industries, local and state government, schools, and the public. Trusted by each sector, we are ideally positioned to convene, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for all.  Come join us on our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone and living our vision for a world where science belongs to each of us for the good of all of us.

Why We Need You

The In-Gallery Learning Program Assistant will facilitate a variety of hands-on STEM activities and interpretations in staffed gallery spaces including the Engineering Design Workshop and Hall of Human Life. They will also support the ongoing maintenance of these In-Gallery Learning spaces by preparing materials and ensuring that the spaces are presentable to general museum audiences.

Applicants must have successfully completed a previous Youth Internship at the Museum of Science.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Engage visitors: Interact directly with museum visitors for 4+ hours per day facilitating activities and interpretations. Act as a museum ambassador providing excellent customer service.
  • Support IGL operations: Assist with the setup and breakdown of daily activities. Help maintain gallery teaching spaces, cleaning and preparing activity materials as needed.
  • Ongoing Training: Train on additional In-Gallery Learning activities in the Engineering Design Workshop, Hall of Human Life, and Charles River Field Station as needed.

What We're Looking For (Competencies)

  • Communication: Comfort talking, interacting, and communicating with people of diverse backgrounds and ages.
  • Collaboration: Comfort working with a team to accomplish a goal. Contribute to discussions and respectfully interact with others.
  • Willingness to learn: Interest in STEM and/or informal education, and a willingness to continue learning.
  • Customer service: Comfort supporting visitors in a positive, engaging way. Comfort with large crowds of people in an active environment, often interacting with hundreds of visitors per hour.

How We Work-Our Values

Mission-Focused: We inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone.

Audience-Driven: Everything we do begins with the people we serve.

Innovative: We are curious, take smart risks, share responsibility, and own outcomes.

Generous: We offer time and energy towards common goals.
