Job description

Safety Statement
This is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Federal Transit Administration and Arizona Department of Transportation and subject to required drug and alcohol testing per policy and regulations. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, random testing, and reasonable suspicion testing. The incumbent is required to fully comply with all operational safety rules and regulations established by Mountain Line.

Job Purpose of a Paratransit Operator
Paratransit Operators safely and reliably transport customers within the City of Flagstaff while serving as ambassadors for Mountain Line's values and guiding principles. Operators apply detailed knowledge of transportation equipment, safety checks, and Department of Transportation requirements while operating on city streets. They provide professional customer service in a fast-paced environment, communicate effectively in writing and orally, make sound decisions, and adhere to strict routing schedules.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure equipment is mechanically sound and completes all documentation as required.
  • Maintains knowledge of streets and service entities within the Mountain Line region.
  • Maintains knowledge of and adherence with all Mountain Line policies, procedures and safety requirements.
  • Provides safe, timely, and courteous service to all Mountain Line passengers particularly those with mobility challenges.
  • Provides door or curb service to eligible passengers.
  • Prepares accurate and legible accident and incident reports when needed.
  • Accurately prepares and completes passenger manifest and cash sheet.
  • Takes trip reservations from clients who may have speech, hearing, or cognitive function impairments.
  • Enters trip reservations into routing software and create manifests to cover paratransit routes.
  • Maintain confidential client information.
  • Reports to work fit for duty.

Attendance
This position requires full availability for any shift, seven days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Attendance should be regular and predictable. General employment policies with regard to vacation, sick, and unpaid leave apply. Occasional need to report to work on day off and work overtime.

Confidentiality
This position has access to sensitive client information, including HIPAA-related medical information and client address and phone information. This position is expected to respect and maintain employee and customer confidentiality.

Knowledge & Skills

Working Conditions, Exposure to Risks and Physical Dangers
This position requires physical effort such as walking, lifting, standing, sitting, reaching, and manual dexterity. May require assisting passengers in wheelchairs by physically lifting the wheelchairs from the curb to the vehicle. This position works onboard a moving vehicle and in an office environment and will require sitting for an extended length of time with constant arm, hand, and foot movement.
The incumbent may encounter violent confrontations, airborne pathogens, and changing weather conditions, including heat, rain, snow, and ice, while operating vehicles and assisting passengers.
Because of the potential exposure associated with the work, incumbents in this job are required to follow all Mountain Line safety procedures, manuals, and guidelines. Additionally, incumbents are required to properly don safety-related clothing, protective hard hats, gloves, footwear, tools and equipment, and other safety-related gear.
Education Requirements

  • High-School Diploma, GED, or equivalency.

Similar Work Experience

  • Minimum of 6 months of similar work experience driving passengers and/or working with persons with disabilities.

Licenses, Training and/or Certifications Required

  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Test.
  • Valid driver's license for the past 2 years.
  • Valid Arizona Class D driver's license.
  • Clean 5-year MVR.
  • Pass a background check.
