Kraton Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and understanding of process optimization principles. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or AutoCAD), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to improve efficiency, ensure safety, and drive continuous improvement in industrial and manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges Process Engineers face when implementing process improvements, and how can they overcome them?

Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, integrating new technologies with existing systems, and ensuring process changes meet regulatory standards. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves clear communication, involving stakeholders early in the process, thorough documentation, and piloting changes before full-scale implementation. Building strong cross-functional relationships and continuously gathering feedback also help ensure that improvements are effective and sustainable.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and optimize industrial processes to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in manufacturing or production environments. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot process issues, and develop solutions to enhance productivity and reduce costs. Process Engineers often work in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and energy, ensuring processes are compliant with environmental and safety regulations. Their work is vital for maintaining smooth operations and achieving organizational goals.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Process engineers typically require a degree, but some related roles like manufacturing technicians, quality inspectors, or certain entry-level industrial jobs can pay around $3,000 monthly without a degree, especially with experience or certifications. Skilled trades such as HVAC technicians, electricians, or welders may also reach this income level through apprenticeships and on-the-job training.

What is the difference between Process Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectProcess EngineerManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six SigmaBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Lean Manufacturing
Work EnvironmentDesigning and optimizing processes, R&D settingsOverseeing production lines, factory floors
Industry UsageManufacturing, chemical, aerospaceAutomotive, electronics, consumer goods

Process Engineers focus on designing and improving manufacturing processes, often working in R&D or engineering departments. Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on implementing and managing production on the factory floor. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ mainly in their scope and work environment.

Job description

Make a +Difference at Kraton!

At Kraton, we make a Positive Difference, and we are looking for individuals who are also looking to make a difference in their jobs, for our customers and to the world.  We are looking to hire a key member of our Operations team at our Panama City, Florida location.

The Plant Controls Engineer III serves as the technical authority for Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and plant control strategies at the site level. This role provides advanced engineering leadership to ensure safe, reliable, and optimized plant operations through the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of control systems.

The position requires expertise in DCS architecture, process control, and instrumentation within a chemical manufacturing environment, along with the ability to lead complex troubleshooting efforts, capital projects, and system upgrades. The Plant Controls Engineer exercises broad technical judgment, influences plant performance, and mentors junior engineers while partnering closely with Operations, Maintenance, and EHS.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the site subject matter expert (SME) for DCS, PI (OSIsoft/Aveva), and plant control systems, ensuring system reliability, availability, and cybersecurity.
  • Design, implement, and optimize process control strategies to support safety, quality, production, and cost objectives.
  • Lead complex DCS configuration, logic development, tuning, and troubleshooting activities across operating units.
  • Support and lead DCS upgrades, system retrofits, re-instrumentation efforts, and obsolescence management.
  • Provide technical support for DCS/Control System related capital projects, including scope definition, control philosophy development, FAT/SAT execution, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Own and support Management of Change (MOC) activities related to control systems, serving as technical reviewer and approver.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce control systems engineering standards, documentation, and best practices.
  • Conduct system audits, support disaster recovery planning, manage spare parts strategies, and maintain long-term system health plans.
  • Collaborate with Process Engineering to translate process requirements into robust control solutions and support process optimization initiatives.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Lead or support root cause investigations, PSM activities, and PHAs related to control system performance or incidents.
  • Communicate technical concepts and project status effectively to plant leadership and senior management.
Required Skills
  • 5 years of engineering experience in a chemical or process manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), PLCs, and industrial instrumentation.
  • Strong understanding of process control principles (chemical process control vs. machine control).
  • Experience working in OSHA 1910.119 PSM-covered facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, influence cross-functional teams, and manage technical risk.
  • Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Education, Certifications & Licenses
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Chemical Engineering preferred).
  • Relevant controls, automation, or process safety certifications a plus.
