Job description
Position Description Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History The Harris County Public Library (HCPL) system, established in 1921, began as a collection of small libraries located in stores, post offices, and private homes. Over the years, it has grown into a robust network comprising 26 branch libraries, two technology service centers, and two partner locations that provide collection and circulation services. HCPL serves the communities of unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems.
In 2024, HCPL received the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest honor awarded to libraries in the United States. Bestowed annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), this award recognizes institutions that deliver exceptional service to their communities. The library was recognized for innovative initiatives like HCPL Connected, Enhanced+ Library Cards, and its Mobile Outreach Librarian program.
HCPL is also recognized as one of the best places to work, offering a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters innovation, collaboration, and professional growth. Its dedication to employee well-being, diversity, and community impact makes HCPL more than just a workplace-it's where individuals can grow, inspire, and contribute to meaningful change. What you will do at Harris County Public Library: The Development Coordinator supports Harris County Public Library's development efforts by assisting with donor, sponsor, nonprofit, foundation, and community partner engagement; researching and tracking potential funding, sponsorship, and partnership opportunities; maintaining development records, contact lists, stewardship documentation, impact data, and related tracking tools; preparing reports, summaries, presentations, correspondence, and recognition materials; coordinating follow-up with partners and stakeholders; supporting grant, sponsorship, and resource development initiatives; documenting partner contributions and outcomes; and working with library leadership and internal departments to ensure development activities are organized, mission-aligned, compliant with County procedures, and supportive of HCPL's strategic priorities.
This is a part time temporary position, with an ending date of December 25, 2026. Duties & Responsibilities: Supports HCPL development, partnership, and community engagement efforts by maintaining relationships with nonprofit organizations, community agencies, educational partners, civic groups, Friends groups, foundations, donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders. Researches, identifies, and tracks funding, sponsorship, partnership, and outreach opportunities that support HCPL programs, services, literacy initiatives, and strategic priorities.
Coordinates partner communications, meeting logistics, follow-up, documentation, records, agreements, calendars, stewardship materials, impact data, and internal updates. Assists with reports, summaries, presentations, correspondence, recognition materials, and other documentation related to development, partnerships, events, and community impact. Coordinates and supports partner events, donor or sponsor activities, community engagement programs, special projects, and public-facing initiatives, including logistics, schedules, supplies, communications, budgets, expenses, and day-of support.
Serves as a point of contact for partners, vendors, presenters, staff, and stakeholders and helps resolve event, scheduling, communication, or logistical concerns. Collects attendance data, feedback, photos, success stories, and outcome information to evaluate effectiveness and support reporting. Works with branch and department staff to align development, partnership, and event activities with community needs, library service priorities, and HCPL's mission.
Provides technical, administrative, analytical, and project support while keeping management informed of issues, deadlines, risks, and decisions requiring approval. Represents HCPL professionally in meetings, events, communications, and community settings and performs other related duties as assigned.
