    Job description

A member of the Roche Group, Genentech has been at the forefront of the biotechnology industry for more than 50 years, developing novel medicines for serious and life-threatening diseases. Genentech has multiple therapies on the market for cancer & other serious illnesses. Please take this opportunity to learn about Genentech where we believe that our employees are our most important asset & are dedicated to remaining a great place to work.

We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on Senior Scientist / Principal Scientist for the Lung Modeling team within the Complex in vitro Systems (CiS) Laboratory. This role will be instrumental in the practical design, development, execution, and characterization of cutting- edge complex in vitro models (CIVM) of lung systems to support the broader Development Sciences, Research, and Translational Medicine departments at Genentech. The successful candidate will apply their deep laboratory expertise in multicellular 3D lung tissue systems, biomaterials, and bioengineering to run microphysiological models of lung segments, improving predictive assessments of drug safety and efficacy in the pulmonary space.

This role will focus on the technical establishment, optimization, and deployment of innovative, state-of-the-art complex lung models to support both discovery and preclinical development portfolios. This includes hands-on evaluation of drug candidates for lung safety, understanding disposition, developing biomarkers, and assessing pharmacodynamic responses relevant to lung diseases. While primarily a senior laboratory-based role driving scientific innovation at the bench, this candidate will also provide technical mentorship to junior scientists, collaborate closely with internal cross-functional project teams, and participate in external collaborations.

    The Opportunity:

As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will :

Develop, design, execute, and characterize advanced lung in vitro models at the bench, including airway and alveolar organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) 3D cultures, organ-on- chip, and other microphysiological systems (MPS) to address critical questions in lung drug discovery and development.

Drive laboratory workflows spanning from modeling healthy and disease alveolar, small airway, and large airway environments, incorporating vascular or stromal components as required.

Provide technical guidance, hands-on training, and scientific mentorship to junior team members in laboratory techniques, fostering professional growth and a high-performing lab environment.

Act as a key technical resource and collaborator between the CiS team and internal research teams, translational medicine, and drug discovery units at Genentech and Roche to maximize the impact of lung-focused projects.

Support the evaluation of external technologies and technical collaborations (academic institutions, consortiums, or CROs) to advance internal lung modeling capabilities.

Share research and platform capabilities through internal cross-functional forums, progress reports, and external presentations or peer-reviewed publications.

    Who You Are:

Ph.D. in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biology, pharmacology, chemical engineering, or a related field, with significant hands-on experience in in vitro systems, specifically lung modeling. Exceptional candidates with equivalent experience will be considered.

Experience Requirements: Senior Scientist: 0-5 years of post-PhD or equivalent experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academia, or research organizations, with a strong focus on complex in vitro lung systems. Principal Scientist: 5+ years of post-PhD or equivalent experience with a demonstrated track record of independent project ownership and technical mastery in complex lung models. Toxicology experience is a plus, with a focus on leveraging CIVMs to elucidate mechanisms of toxicity and predict safety.

Proven expertise in developing, qualifying, and applying 3D lung tissue models, organoids, microphysiological systems (MPS), or related platforms in a drug discovery or translational research setting.

A strong track record of scientific contributions through peer-reviewed publications and presentations in areas related to complex in vitro lung systems.

Experience mentoring junior scientists or guiding lab technicians is highly desirable.

    Key Skills and Competencies:

Deep technical mastery of lung biology and the underlying mechanisms of lung diseases, coupled with profound knowledge of how complex in vitro systems can be applied in lung disease and healthy tissue modeling.

Expert hands-on expertise with cells of pulmonary origin or iPSC-derived lung cell cultures. Experience with 3D co-cultures and 3D vasculature is highly preferred.

Hands-on experience assessing cellular phenotypes within various biomaterials.

Proficiency with various cellular assays and readouts relevant to lung function and toxicity; excellent light microscopy and imaging skills are a plus.

Experience using various omics approaches to study phenotypes in complex in vitro models is a plus.

Highly collaborative spirit, professionalism, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively across diverse, cross-functional project teams.

Excellent organizational skills coupled with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute multiple laboratory projects.

Relocation benefits are not available for this posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $120,700 - 224,100 (Senior Scientist) and $141,500 - 262,900 (Principal Scientist). Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
