Job description
Chief Executive Officer
Reports to: Board of Directors
Department: Administrative
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Employment Status: Full-Time
Organizational Overview:
Rocky Mountain Children's Health Foundation (RMCHF) is a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2008, dedicated to improving the quality of life for families, sick children, and infants through Patient and Family Assistance Programs, education, and outreach.
The Foundation operates Mothers' Milk Bank (MMB), the largest nonprofit milk bank in North America and a significant mission-based earned-revenue program that plays an important role in RMCHF's financial model and sustainability. RMCHF is an approximately $5.6 million organization with 22 professional staff and is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors.
The Opportunity:
RMCHF is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and dynamic Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into its next chapter. The ideal candidate will combine strategic vision with the ability to translate priorities into action and measurable results.
The next CEO joins RMCHF at an important point in its evolution, with an opportunity to build on the organization's strengths while positioning it for greater impact and long-term sustainability. Key priorities include strengthening and diversifying philanthropic support, raising RMCHF's visibility and presence in the community, building strategic partnerships, and ensuring the organization has the leadership structure, systems, and resources needed for its future. The CEO will take time to listen and learn, respecting institutional knowledge and existing strengths while bringing clarity to roles, accountability, decision-making, and organizational priorities.
An important early priority will be assessing RMCHF's organizational structure and needs. The CEO will evaluate roles, responsibilities, reporting relationships, spans of control, areas where responsibilities are currently shared or combined, and the capabilities of the existing team. Based on that assessment, the CEO will recommend and implement a structure that creates clear accountability, builds the right leadership capacity, and best positions RMCHF for future growth and impact.
Working in partnership with fundraising staff and the Board, the CEO will play an active role in expanding RMCHF's philanthropic reach and building relationships with donors and other supporters. The CEO will also serve as a visible ambassador for RMCHF, strengthening its community presence and developing relationships and partnerships that increase awareness, support, and impact.
The CEO will provide strategic leadership across the organization, including Mothers' Milk Bank, balancing MMB's significant mission and financial role with strengthening the broader identity, impact, and long-term sustainability of RMCHF.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is ultimately accountable for the leadership, performance, financial health, culture, and impact of the entire organization.
Essential Functions:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
- Leadership, Strategy & Governance
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for RMCHF, translating mission and vision into clear priorities, measurable goals, and results
- Serve as a strategic partner and primary staff liaison to the Board, providing transparent information, thoughtful recommendations, and clear measures of organizational performance
- Partner with the Board to refine and implement a multi-year strategic plan and establish organizational priorities
- Use data to evaluate progress, identify opportunities and risks, and inform decision-making and continuous improvement
- Foster strong communication, trust, and collaboration among the Board, leadership team, and staff
- Organizational Structure & Operations
- Assess and evolve RMCHF's organizational structure, leadership capacity, roles, reporting relationships, and decision-making authority to ensure the organization has the people and structure needed to achieve its goals
- Ensure RMCHF has effective systems, processes, technology, and infrastructure to support strong organizational performance
- Provide strategic oversight of operations and program delivery while empowering leaders to effectively manage their areas of responsibility
- Ensure resources are aligned with organizational priorities and foster accountability, effectiveness, and continuous improvement
- People, Culture & Leadership Development
- Build, develop, and retain a talented, collaborative, and high-performing team
- Coach, mentor, and develop current and emerging leaders, building leadership capacity and bench strength throughout the organization
- Foster an inclusive, mission-driven culture characterized by trust, open communication, collaboration, accountability, and professional growth
- Empower leaders to make decisions and lead effectively within their areas of responsibility
- Lead organizational change thoughtfully, respecting institutional knowledge while communicating clearly and building trust
- Fundraising & Financial Sustainability
- Lead the organization's fundraising strategy in partnership with fundraising staff and the Board to grow and diversify philanthropic revenue
- Work with fundraising staff to cultivate and steward donors, strengthen RMCHF's major-gift pipeline, and expand relationships with individual, foundation, corporate, and other funding partners
- Engage and support Board members as active partners in fundraising and community relationship-building
- Lead budgeting, long-range financial planning, and financial oversight to ensure long-term financial health and sustainability
- Provide strategic and financial oversight of RMCHF's diverse revenue model, including philanthropic revenue and significant mission-related earned revenue generated through Mothers' Milk Bank
- Monitor financial performance, evaluate revenue opportunities, and ensure the Board has clear, timely information to support sound decision-making
- Ensure transparent financial reporting and strong financial controls
- Community Engagement, Partnerships & Visibility
- Serve as a visible and compelling ambassador for RMCHF, clearly communicating its mission, programs, impact, and priorities
- Build and strengthen relationships with healthcare systems, community organizations, funders, corporate partners, donors, civic leaders, and other key stakeholders
- Identify strategic partnerships and opportunities that expand RMCHF's reach, visibility, impact, and resources
- Work with staff and Board members to strengthen RMCHF's external positioning and community presence
- Mothers' Milk Bank Strategic Oversight
- Provide strategic oversight of Mothers' Milk Bank as a critical part of RMCHF's mission, operations, and financial sustainability
- Ensure MMB has the leadership, resources, systems, and appropriate oversight necessary to maintain high standards of quality, safety, and service
- Evaluate MMB's performance, opportunities, sustainability, and alignment with RMCHF's broader strategy, ensuring the Board has the information needed to provide appropriate governance and oversight
- Quality, Compliance & Risk
- Ensure appropriate systems and practices are in place for regulatory compliance, quality assurance, safety, and organizational risk management
- Work with staff, medical leadership, and the Board to identify and mitigate significant organizational, operational, financial, and reputational risks
- Maintain high standards of ethics, accountability, compliance, safety, and stewardship
Supervisory Responsibilities:

- A relationship-builder who is comfortable with fundraising, community engagement, partnership development, and increasing organizational visibility
- A collaborative, emotionally intelligent, and transparent leader who builds trust internally and externally
- A strong people leader and mentor who develops talent, builds leadership capacity, creates accountability, and empowers others to succeed
- A confident and compelling communicator with the executive presence to serve as a credible public face of RMCHF
- Curious and willing to challenge assumptions while respecting RMCHF's history, institutional knowledge, mission, and strengths
- Comfortable leading an organization that combines healthcare-related operations, philanthropy, programs, and community impact
- Education
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience required
