JOB SUMMARY:

We work to help people where they are now, and help them develop a sustainable path for future well-being with the Social Determinants of Health through a trauma informed care lens as defined by the agency. A Classroom Support Substitute provides this in collaboration with center staff to greet parents, assist the Head Start Teacher in delivering the classroom curriculum in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and guidelines as well as agency standards. The Classroom Support Substitute is responsible for the care and supervision of children in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and agency standards while ensuring that services provided are in alignment with the Social Determinants of Health through a trauma informed care lens as defined by the agency. Ensures that the classroom is one in which children are aware of expectations, provided with rules and maintain consistency, build a positive relationship with the children which focuses on positive communication, appropriate physical proximity, respect and positive discipline, and guidance. He/She is responsible for following Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and guidelines as well as agency standards and protocols with a focus on safety and promoting a positive experience for the children, and is a positive role model to all children. Maintains supervision of children and within Head Start Program Performance ratios at all times. The Classroom Support Substitute I will be required to assist in various Head Start classrooms and/or centers as assigned, and moves from classroom to classroom or center to center as needed and directed.

1. Responsible for working in collaboration with center staff to ensure children’s safety in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, agency policies and ensures that clients have access, as needed, to all five pillars of the social determinants of health with a trauma informed lens through Agency services and/or community partners.

1. Assists centers as needed to Ensure adequate supervision of children ensuring ratios are maintained in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards regulations and agency standards. Ensures that accurate name to face head counts are conducted as children enter and exit classrooms, restrooms, playgrounds, and other areas of the facility and ensure all children are accounted for at all times. Ensure children are signed out by the authorized parent or adult.

1. Assist teaching staff in carrying out the daily classroom schedule; and assist with the implementation of lesson plans in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.

1. Assist with the planning and utilization of appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities and materials that reflect understanding of the developmental needs of young children.

1. Assist with the setup of the classroom environment so that it is conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, cognitive, social and emotional need of all children.

1. Follow all directives given by supervisors in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, agency guidelines, and licensing minimum standards; and follow all guidelines, policies and procedures set forth by the agency.

1. Responsible for providing a variety of support and service to the education center to include, but not limited to, classroom and playground supervision, meal distribution, after meal clean up, sanitizing toys and table tops, general center clean up, greeting of visitors and parents, clerical assistance, answering phones, maintaining classroom documentation, etc.

1. Attend agency, program and Head Start Center staff meetings and/or trainings as required.

1. Maintain good relationships with stakeholders, current and potential Head Start children and their families, community and co-workers, focusing on providing excellent and culturally sensitive customer service and always presenting a positive image of the agency.

1. Maintain a working environment which encourages mutual respect, promotes respectful and congenial relationships between employees and is free from all forms of harassment.

1. Perform other duties as assigned, including presentations to community groups and organizations, in accordance with the agency’s “team” philosophy.

1. High School Diploma or GED.

1. Successful completion of the Family Service Smart Start for Teacher’s ANGELS Substitute Program.

1. Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification.

1. Ability to implement appropriate teaching strategies and techniques.

1. Fluent in English and Spanish (read, write, and speak) desirable.

1. Family Service often serves the most vulnerable in our community and has adopted a policy on mandatory vaccination to safeguard the health of our clients, staff and community from the hazards of COVID-19. Submission of vaccine card required.
2. Staff will be required to submit proof of their vaccination status or may request to be exempt from vaccination due to a religious and/or medical accommodation.

1. Certificate or license, as applicable, by the appropriate State agency as a qualified practitioner.

1. State of Texas vehicle operator’s license and proof of liability insurance.

1. While performing the duties of this job, you must be able to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear, and taste or smell.

1. You may be able to lift up to 25 pounds, have close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust your focus with good hand-eye coordination.
