Job description

Piper Maddox is partnering with a growing advanced recycling company seeking a Senior I&C Engineer for its Atlanta-area team.

This person will serve as the owner’s technical lead for instrumentation, controls, and automation across greenfield projects, facility expansions, and process upgrades. The role is focused on defining technical requirements, reviewing engineering deliverables, and managing EPCs, integrators, vendors, and contractors from design through commissioning and startup.

This is not a dedicated PLC programming role. The ideal candidate will have strong instrumentation design experience, practical automation knowledge, and the leadership skills to drive project execution and follow-through.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead I&C execution across capital projects, expansions, and process upgrades
  • Develop and review P&IDs, instrument data sheets, I/O lists, loop diagrams, control narratives, and cause-and-effect matrices
  • Define PLC, HMI, remote I/O, packaged-equipment, and industrial-network requirements
  • Select and specify instruments, analyzers, control valves, and related equipment
  • Coordinate interfaces with MCCs, VFDs, control panels, power, grounding, shielding, and hazardous-area systems
  • Manage EPC firms, system integrators, vendors, and contractors
  • Review technical submittals, RFQs, bids, RFIs, and field changes
  • Support FAT, SAT, loop checks, commissioning, startup, and construction walkdowns
  • Identify design gaps, integration issues, and cost or schedule risks

Qualifications and Background:

  • 7+ years of I&C experience in chemical processing, refining, petrochemical, oil and gas, manufacturing, renewable fuels, or a similar process industry
  • Strong instrumentation design and project-delivery experience
  • Greenfield project experience from design through commissioning and startup
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens, or similar platforms
  • Knowledge of Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profinet, Profibus, and HART
  • Understanding of PLC/HMI architecture, industrial networks, MCC/VFD interfaces, and 480 VAC systems
  • Experience acting as an I&C lead, owner’s engineer, or technical representative
  • Strong leadership, communication, and contractor-management skills

Working Arrangement:

  • Atlanta-area position
  • Onsite four days per week
  • Friday remote flexibility
  • Approximately 10–20% travel
