Job description

Overview
Edgewater Federal Solutions is seeking a Senior Linux System Administrator to support a major national laboratory.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor, maintain, and repair physical and virtual server systems.
  • Resolve technical issues affecting hardware, operating systems, or applications.
  • Apply operating system or application patches, install or replace hardware, and implement configuration changes to improve or restore system performance.
  • Perform system capacity analysis and planning.
  • Assist users in accessing and using business systems.
  • Develop instructions and procedures for system maintenance, create scripts to automate monitoring and repair tasks, and conduct quality assurance checks.
  • Collaborate with customers, subject matter experts, and architects to analyze, evaluate, and optimize systems.
  • Contribute to process development and system improvement efforts

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline and a minimum of 4 years of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties.
  • Related experience may be substituted for relevant education and vice versa.
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a U.S. Dept. of Energy Clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

Required Skills:
  • Proficient with major distributions (e.g., Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu).
  • Managing users, groups, permissions, and file systems.
  • Shell Scripting-Writing and debugging Bash or other shell scripts for automation.
  • Package Management-Using tools like yum, apt, rpm, dpkg for installing and updating software.
  • Networking-Configuring network interfaces, firewalls (iptables, firewalld), DNS, routing, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • System Monitoring and Performance Tuning-Using tools like top, htop, vmstat, iostat, sar, and monitoring solutions (Nagios, Prometheus).
  • Storage Management-Managing disks, partitions, LVM, RAID, NFS, and mounting file systems.
  • Security-Implementing SELinux/AppArmor, SSH hardening, user authentication, and basic vulnerability assessment.
  • Backup and Recovery-Familiarity with backup tools and disaster recovery planning.
  • Configuration Management-Experience with tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef for automated deployments.
  • Virtualization and Containers-Working knowledge of KVM, VMware, Docker, and Kubernetes basics.
  • Log Management-Using syslog, journald, and log analysis tools.
  • Troubleshooting-Diagnosing and resolving system and application issues efficiently.
  • Analytical thinking to diagnose complex issues.
  • Clear documentation and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Working effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Prioritizing tasks and managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to changing environments.
