Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a seasoned HR Manager to serve as the operational backbone of our People & HR function, reporting directly to the VP of People Operations. This is a hands-on generalist role designed for an experienced HR professional who thrives in a fast-moving environment and can operate independently across the full spectrum of human resources. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of employee relations, compliance, benefits administration, and HR policy and is comfortable being the day-to-day point of contact for employees and managers alike while the VP focuses on talent acquisition strategy and organizational development.


Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations

•          Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations matters including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, performance improvement plans, and terminations

•          Conduct thorough, impartial investigations into workplace complaints, harassment claims, and policy violations

•          Partner with managers to coach and counsel employees, promoting a positive and compliant work environment

•          Manage unemployment claims, workers' compensation cases, and leave of absence administration (FMLA, ADA, etc.)


HR Operations & Compliance

•          Maintain and update employee records, HR files, and HRIS data with accuracy and confidentiality

•          Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (NJ-specific regulations a plus)

•          Develop, update, and enforce HR policies, the employee handbook, and standard operating procedures

•          Manage EEOC, OFCCP, and other regulatory reporting requirements

•          Support audits and provide HR documentation as required


Benefits & Compensation

•          Administer employee benefits programs including health insurance, 401(k), PTO, and ancillary benefits

•          Serve as the primary liaison with benefits brokers and carriers; manage open enrollment processes

•          Support compensation benchmarking and assist in designing competitive pay structures


Onboarding & Offboarding

•          Manage the full onboarding experience for new hires — from offer letter through orientation and 90-day check-ins

•          Conduct structured offboarding including exit interviews, final pay compliance, and knowledge transfer

•          Maintain and improve onboarding materials, org charts, and HR documentation


Performance Management & Training

•          Administer the annual performance review cycle; support managers in writing effective evaluations

•          Identify training needs and coordinate development programs for employees and managers

•          Track and report key HR metrics — turnover, headcount, time-to-fill, engagement scores — for VP review


Required Qualifications

•          Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field

•          7–10 years of progressive HR generalist or HR management experience

•          Strong working knowledge of employment law, particularly NJ and federal regulations

•          Demonstrated experience handling complex employee relations matters independently

•          Proficiency in HRIS platforms (ADP Workforce Now, Paycom, UKG, or similar)

•          PHR or SHRM-CP certification strongly preferred

•          Excellent written and verbal communication skills; high degree of discretion and confidentiality

•          Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and exercise sound judgment
