Job description

Tax Associate
Permanent Full Time, Hybrid

Salary - $75K-$80K per annum

*CPA Students will not be considered for this role.

Stern Cohen LLP is seeking an experienced Tax Associate to join our modern and diverse public accounting firm.

The Tax Associate will work directly with a Tax Manager and two Tax Partners. The firm's Tax Department provides tax advisory and tax planning services, handles complex tax filings (e.g. non-resident filings), and supports the rest of the firm. Unlike other firms, our Tax Department is not responsible for the tax filings of the entire firm. We are an advisory and tax planning-driven tax department.

We are seeking a candidate who aspires to a career in tax and is eager to grow with the firm. An ideal candidate may have recently completed their Canadian CPA at a small to midsize accounting firm and is looking to move into a dedicated tax role. We will support and encourage the candidate to enroll in the CPA in-depth tax program.

Stern Cohen offers a rewarding career opportunity with an innovative and award-winning firm. We encourage you to check out this website, LinkedIn and our Careers page for team member reviews and to learn more about what makes us unique.

Responsibilities:

  • Performing preliminary research into income and indirect tax issues;
  • Preparation of complex and/or specialty tax returns (e.g. deceased returns, multi-jurisdictional filings, treaty-based tax returns, filings for non-residents);
  • Completing a variety of specialty tax forms (e.g., T2057, T2054, T2062);
  • Communicating with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on behalf of our clients;
  • Preparing objections and voluntary disclosures;
  • Analysis and completion of corporate, personal, partnership, and trust income tax returns;
  • Year-end tax planning analysis;
  • Attend weekly tax group meetings.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • MUST already possess a recently acquired Canadian accounting designation (CPA)
  • Enrollment in, or willingness to enroll in, the CPA In-depth tax program
  • Experience with owner-managed businesses is considered an asset
  • Have a keen interest and desire to work in personal and corporate tax
  • Experience using TaxPrep (Personal, Corporate, Trust, and Forms) is desirable
  • Demonstrate well-developed analytical and research skills, together with attention to detail
  • Be committed to providing exceptional client service
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments, work independently and as part of a team
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills (both verbal and written)
  • Well-organized and able to balance competing demands
  • Professional self-confidence

Benefits of working at Stern Cohen:

  • Culture of lifelong learning
  • Supportive and collaborative work environment
  • Enthusiastic team spirit
  • Flex hours to allow for work-life balance
  • Dress for Your Day: casual dress policy
  • Competitive and comprehensive benefits and compensation package
