Job Description

The Dr. Neeru Gupta Laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Computational Biology and Translational Bioinformatics) to join an innovative translational research program investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying ocular and neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will apply advanced computational approaches to integrate multi-omics and imaging datasets, identify disease mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and biomarkers, and contribute to an interdisciplinary research program spanning ocular biology, neuroscience, and translational medicine. Working closely with laboratory scientists, the successful candidate will integrate computational analyses with experimental research while developing independent research projects and contributing to scientific publications and competitive grant applications. The position provides opportunities to present research at national and international meetings, and compete for postdoctoral fellowships and career development awards.

Organizational Status

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report directly to Dr. Neeru Gupta and work closely with research associates, research staff, students, and collaborators within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Work Performed:

Design, implement, and conduct independent research projects in computational biology and translational bioinformatics.

Identify molecular pathways, disease mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and biomarkers through integrative computational analyses.

Analyze, integrate, and interpret genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, imaging, and other high-dimensional biological datasets.

Develop reproducible computational workflows and data visualization strategies to support biological discovery.

Collaborate closely with laboratory scientists to integrate computational analyses with experimental research.

Prepare manuscripts, scientific presentations, and assist in the preparation of competitive grant applications.

Present research findings at laboratory meetings and scientific conferences.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to a collaborative research environment.

Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have:

A recent PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Systems Biology, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated research productivity in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, or related disciplines, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Strong research experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, or genomics.

Experience analyzing genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, spatial multi-omics, imaging, or other high-dimensional biological datasets.

Proficiency in R and/or Python for computational biology and bioinformatics analyses.

Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, neuroscience, or ophthalmic research is considered an asset.

Experience with single-cell genomics, spatial transcriptomics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or translational biomedical research is considered an asset.

Supervision Received

Works independently under the direction of Dr. Neeru Gupta.

Supervision Given

May provide mentorship and technical guidance to undergraduate and graduate students, research assistants, and trainees.
