Job description

This position is 8.0 hours a day / 175 days a year.
Purpose Statement
The job of Elementary Library Media Technician (JC625) is done for the purpose/s of planning and managing the library programs; promoting reading through the library; maintaining a balanced library collection; maintaining the proper learning environment in a Library Media Center; assisting students in learning information literacy skills and library technology; cataloging and processing library material and patron inventories; and consulting with teachers for specific assignment emphasis.
This job reports to the Principal
Essential Functions
  • Conducts curriculum-related library lessons for classes (e.g. library resources, research skills, technology, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring students and staff are able to make full use of the library resources.
  • Coordinates library programs and events (e.g. reading incentive programs, story times, book fairs, guest speakers, etc.) for the purpose of promoting the use of library media resources.
  • Establishes District and department long term library collection development plans for the purpose of ensuring organizational objectives are achieved in the most efficient and timely manner.
  • Evaluates library resources for retention within collection (e.g. damaged books, retirement of periodicals, age-appropriateness of material, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an up-to-date library collection that meets patrons needs.
  • Inventories library resources (e.g. books, periodicals, videos, etc.) for the purpose of documenting losses and maintaining availability of materials.
  • Maintains library collection (e.g. periodicals in correct location, information displays current, books repaired, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of individual library books and materials.
  • Monitors student activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conducive to learning.
  • Oversees student workers (e.g. scheduled work, evaluation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring implementation of tasks assigned to student workers.
  • Participates in meetings (e.g. staff meetings, orientation, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and conveying information.
  • Prepares a variety of information (e.g. collection statistics, scheduling reports and requests, renewal information, overdue lists, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
  • Processes a variety of library materials (e.g. periodicals, software, damaged or overdue books, media, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring library resources are available and in good form.
  • Researches a variety of work-related topics (e.g. selection sources, emerging trends in library science, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring orders are in line with District and department collection development plans and within budget.
  • Responds to a wide variety of inquiries (e.g. availability of books, locating appropriate references, status of overdue books, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and direction as needed.
  • Schedules wide variety of activities (e.g. student orientation, classes focused on specific research projects, resource exploratory meetings with teachers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that library facilities and personnel are available as needed.
  • Utilizes library-specific software and hardware for the purpose of ensuring library media remain relevant and up-to-date.

Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Education: High school graduation or GED
