DEPARTMENT: Decatur High School
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Schools
FLSA STATUS: Exempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, shall appoint the High School Principal. The annual period of service for the High School Principal shall be 225 days.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Principal provides the vision and leadership to promote and sustain high academic achievement for all students. Serves as the school's instructional leader. Demonstrates the capacity to develop and maintain a high-functioning professional learning community. Collaborates with principal colleagues to provide a seamless K-12 approach to teaching and learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
  • Supports and promotes the vision and strategic plan of the school and the district; establishes and maintains a strategic direction and clear vision for instruction
  • Use a systematic plan of checks and balances when preparing and supervising the building's budget; manages the budget and resources through a clear collaborative process
  • Sees that facilities are operated effectively and efficiently and that applicable health and safety standards are met; Ensures students' physical, social and emotional safety
  • Communicates effectively with all stakeholders
  • Serves as the Instructional Leader of the School
    • Engages all stakeholders in developing a vision, mission and goals that provide a clear direction for students to be academically successful
    • Shares leadership with stakeholders
    • Uses data to make instructional decisions
    • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the school's instructional programs and teacher practices
    • Collaboratively develops SMART goals aligned with the district's improvement plan to ensure that all staff have high expectations for student achievement and result in increased student achievement
    • Creates and maintains a results-focused learning environment
    • Oversees the implementation and management of extracurricular programs that enhance student growth and achievement
    • Uses the CSD Instructional Framework as the basis to establish a common language and shared vision for effective instruction
    • Keeps abreast of developments in secondary school curriculum and instruction and provides input and recommendations relevant to the incorporation of recent trends and developments into the school's curriculum
    • Ensures that content standards drive daily instruction
    • Monitors and evaluates the use of various assessment data to provide timely feedback to students and parents as well as to inform instructional practices
  • Fosters and Sustains a positive school climate
    • Practices shared decision making
    • Implements best practices in school-wide behavior management to ensure that student behavior does not interfere with instruction and clearly communicates expectations to staff, students and parents.
    • Develops, implements, and maintains a school safety plan that manages crisis situations in an effective and timely manner
  • Organizational Management
    • Uses data to identify and leverage the resources of time, money, technology, materials, and space for maximum benefit of all students
    • Ensures an equitable allocation of resources
    • Provides supervision and oversight for fund-raising events at the high school and assumes responsibility for the proper handling of funds
    • Provides for the organization of appropriate recognition programs for a variety of school activities
    • Interprets and enforces district regulations
  • Human Resource Management and Teacher/Staff Evaluations
    • Uses data to establish priorities for recruiting, selecting, inducting, supporting, evaluating and developing staff
    • Promotes staff professional growth, cooperation and self-development
    • Coordinates scheduling of professional learning with the district professional learning coordinator
  • Professionalism
    • Models the importance of professional growth and protects time for teachers to engage in meaningful professional growth opportunities
    • Maintains composure when mitigating teacher, parent and student concerns
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Executive Director of Schools or Superintendent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises all certified and classified staff assigned to the building.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduate degree in Education, middle grades, elementary or secondary content area
  • Fifth year level certification in leadership (L-5)
  • Valid Georgia Educators Certificate
  • Five years classroom teaching experience
  • Three years experience as an Assistant Principal, Instructional Coach or School Improvement Specialist
  • A working knowledge and understanding of Georgia Public Education rules, regulations, and laws
  • Ability to understand and work within local district charter
  • Other education or experience deemed equivalent by the Superintendent

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Sixth Year certification in leadership (L-6)
  • Specialists level degree or higher in Education, or related subject area
  • Two years experience as an secondary school principal

EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
WORK HOURS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position may require non-standard work hours (nights and limited occasional weekends) and the ability to lift and carry files and materials up to 30 pounds. The employee is required to move freely throughout the facility, sit for prolonged periods of time. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to interact with people in writing, over the phone and in person are required. Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Salary Range: From/To
$93,593 to $132,233 based upon verified years of relative work experience.
AP years will count as 1/2 year of experience toward a principal position
