TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The Board of Education, upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, shall appoint the Lead Custodian. The annual period of service shall be 244 days.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Facilities and Maintenance, as well as the Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor, the Lead Custodian provides support and work quality reporting to ensure that City Schools of Decatur facilities are clean, safe, and comfortable learning environments for staff and students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
• Assists with the procurement and distribution of custodial products and supplies including effective delivery, inventory control and cost control
• Demonstrates on the job best practices for all custodial staff; Provides training as directed
• Effectively communicates with Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor to identify custodial needs or coordinate special school based custodial projects as needed
• May perform light maintenance operations as required
• Ensures functionality and workability of all custodial equipment
• Performs custodial duties as required; May be called upon to occasionally backfill custodians in times of high absenteeism
• Coordinates with manager to ensure requisition and assignment of substitute custodial staff
• Moves furniture and equipment as necessary
• Sets up and tears down for special events
• Reports items that are in need of repair
• Secures buildings as needed, or directed by manager, when custodian is absent in a school
• Performs minor maintenance on equipment (i.e. changes vacuum cleaner belts, pads on buffer,
• Participates in training programs to increase skills and proficiency as related to job assignment.
• Perform all other duties assigned by the Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor
• Identify and report to Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor/Manager repair needs and safety discrepancies when observed at schools
• Reports repairs made and materials use to supervisor
• Maintain a high degree of punctuality and attendance
• Maintains a clean and neat personal appearance
• Ensures adherence to good safety procedures
• Operate school Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for vehicle and all supplies and equipment on the vehicle

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• 3 years relative work experience
• 1 year experience in a related lead role
PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
• Associates Degree or 2 years college level courses
• 5 years relative work experience
• 3 years experience in a lead role
• Certification and documented training in custodial services and equipment care.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, or hear. Lifting up to 50 pounds may be required on an occasional basis. Team lifts in excess of 100 pounds may be required on an occasional basis. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision and distance vision

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring a clean, safe work environment.

Equipment

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
