Job description

CABVI is seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to provide vision services to infant, preschool, and school-age children who are blind and visually impaired.

Job Duties Include:

  • Teaches early development and educational skills including concept development, vision training, compensatory skills, self-help skills, communication skills and socialization skills.
  • Plans, prepares and implements lessons as specified on the child’s IFSP or IEP.
  • Instructs students in the use of low vision aids and adaptive equipment; conducts non-physicians assessments of child’s functional vision skills.
  • Consults, teaches and provides support to family members, associated professionals, school districts, and other children’s care givers and service providers.
  • Represents CABVI in the community at professional, recreational and outreach activities associated with children’s services.
  • Completes and submits all required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Develops weekly schedules to achieve hourly expectations in a cost effective manner.
  • Maintains a reference library of current related materials and acquires information regarding research, development and technology.
  • Adapts to change and completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements Include:

  • BA or MA in Education. Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired required.
  • Must meet the Department of Special Education and the Department of Health personnel standards.
  • Must have ability to write effective plans, reports and correspondence.
  • Must be able to give explicit visual cues according to child’s visual status and have ability to develop the child’s confidence and self-esteem.
  • Must have ability to effectively present information, and respond to questions from children, parents, professionals and the general public.
  • Grades 1 and 2 Braille skills. Must have good knowledge regarding adaptive equipment and low vision aids.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Extensive travel.

The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is a not-for-profit agency with professional and support staff who provide comprehensive vision rehabilitation programs annually to more than 2000 people who are blind and visually impaired in a nine-county area. We teach independent living skills, as well as orientation and mobility, and we offer low vision services, children’s services, and continually-expanding technology and employment programs. One facet of our employment services is Central Industries, the Association’s manufacturing division that helps support agency services. Our mission is to assist people who are blind or visually impaired achieve their highest levels of independence.
