Day in the Life:

The Foster Manager leads all aspects of the foster program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals while delivering exceptional customer service both internally and externally. This role partners closely with cross-functional teams to implement program improvements, enhance foster engagement, and improve animal outcomes. Responsibilities include developing and training staff and volunteers on medical and customer service protocols, tracking program data, monitoring outcomes, and driving strategies to reduce length of stay. The Foster Manager must be comfortable navigating emotionally complex situations, maintaining a solutions-oriented mindset, and working effectively with a diverse group of people and animals.

This position oversees daily operations of the foster program, including medical scheduling and owned animal programs, while leading recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts for foster volunteers in collaboration with the marketing team. The Foster Manager supervises and develops staff, ensures appropriate staffing levels, manages employee relations, and conducts performance evaluations in partnership with Human Resources. Additional responsibilities include managing the foster budget, preparing regular reports with actionable recommendations, coordinating foster appreciation initiatives, and leading responses to urgent cases to place pets quickly into foster homes.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) certification preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record to be insured as an AHS driver.
  • 2–4 years of leadership experience driving customer service excellence, optimizing operations, and developing and analyzing programs for continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading large teams and coaching and developing leaders.
  • Animal welfare experience preferred.
  • Highly skilled in interpersonal communication, conflict management, and fostering positive relationships.
  • Must be able to operate in a fast-paced and complex operations environment.
  • Exhibits strong communication abilities, including oral, written, and public speaking skills.
  • Able to develop budgets and estimate costs.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. There will be wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
