Argonne National Laboratory Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you need a doctoral degree in a relevant field, advanced research skills, and a strong publication record. Expertise in specialized laboratory techniques, data analysis software (such as R or Python), and familiarity with grant-writing or research funding processes are often required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with peers and disseminating research findings. These abilities are crucial for advancing scientific knowledge, securing research funding, and building a successful academic or industry career.

What are some typical challenges faced by Postdoctoral Research Fellows when transitioning to independent research roles?

Postdoctoral Research Fellows often face challenges such as balancing independent research with the expectations set by their principal investigator, securing funding for their own projects, and building a professional network. Navigating the shift from a supervised role to leading projects requires developing grant-writing skills, managing collaborations, and mentoring junior researchers. Actively seeking feedback, attending conferences, and publishing consistently can help fellows establish their reputation and prepare for future independent positions in academia or industry.

What is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow?

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow is an individual who has completed their doctoral studies (Ph.D. or equivalent) and undertakes advanced academic or scientific research, typically under the guidance of a principal investigator or faculty member. The main goal of a postdoctoral fellowship is to deepen expertise in a specific research area, contribute to scholarly publications, and gain experience necessary for independent research or academic positions. These positions are often temporary, lasting from one to several years, and can be found in universities, research institutions, or industry. Postdocs play a vital role in advancing research projects and may also mentor students or assist with teaching.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Research Fellow vs Research Scientist?

AspectPostdoctoral Research FellowResearch Scientist
Required CredentialsDoctoral degree (Ph.D.) in relevant fieldMaster's or Ph.D., often with more industry experience
Work EnvironmentAcademic or research institutionsIndustry labs, corporate R&D
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, government research agenciesPrivate companies, biotech, tech firms
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Postdoctoral Research Fellows typically hold a Ph.D. and work in academic or research settings, focusing on specialized research projects. Research Scientists may have similar credentials but often work in industry, applying research to product development or innovation. While both roles involve research, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is usually a temporary position aimed at gaining experience, whereas Research Scientists are often more involved in applied research within companies.

Job description

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral appointee in experimental condensed matter physics. Although exceptional candidates in all areas of experimental condensed matter physics will be considered, particular emphasis will be placed on the dynamical studies of 2D materials and their functionalities.

This postdoctoral position is supported by a DOE-funded research program on ultrafast science involving Argonne National Laboratory, University of Washington, and MIT. The goal of this research program is to understand and harness the nonequilibrium correlation between structural, charge, and spin/pseudospin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional (2D) materials. The success of this program will lead to new means to control the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of 2D materials at ultrafast timescales, which holds promises for developing new energy technologies. The candidate is responsible for conceiving, planning, and implementing the scientific research, and for reporting relevant results in an appropriate form.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated for research excellence and have a strong track record in problem solving and scientific publications. He/she will be responsible for conducting research related to the experimental characterization of ultrafast dynamics of 2D materials using a range of ultrafast techniques including terahertz, optical, and x-ray radiation. Candidates with a strong background in quantum materials, ultrafast lasers, and synchrotron or FEL-based x-ray diffraction techniques are highly encouraged to apply. The selected individual will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and gain in-depth knowledge of the research frontiers in the fields of quantum materials. He/she will also have the opportunity to be a part of a world-class scientific team and lead tasks in vigorous research programs.

Position Requirements

  • A strong background in condensed matter physics and materials science is required.

  • Research experiences in ultrafast science is preferred, such as in applying time-resolved microscopy / spectroscopy, scattering technique for quantum material research using advanced optical and THz techniques.

  • Ability to analyze and understand complex data set is required.

  • Experience to lead ultrafast x-ray scattering or electron scattering experiments is a plus but not required.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

Please upload the following as attachments to your application via Workday:

  • CV/Resume

  • Unofficial Ph.D. Transcripts

  • If already awarded, a copy of your Ph.D. diploma. Candidates can be currently enrolled to apply, but must have proof of degree conferral by the position start date.

At the point of interview, candidates will be asked to submit the name/contact of three references.
