Job description

Description General Definition of Work Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work in the trimming and removal of trees; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Tree Trimmer Supervisor. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Examples of Duties Essential Functions Drives and operates lift truck and uses to prune and remove large trees often in close quarters near buildings, vehicles and voltage wires.

Climbs trees using ropes and saddle without spikes for pruning and with spikes for removal. Climbs trees using various saws, hooks, ropes, ladders and works from bucket truck. Trims to eliminate hazards and to preserve the beauty of trees on streets and other public property.

Prunes trees to remove live and dead limbs, using chain saws, pole saws, pruners and hand pruners. Removes dead, broken, misshaped and undesired branches and tops trees using a variety of tools and lowers portions removed to the ground with ropes. Assists in use of stump grinder and track hoe.

Operates various equipment related to tree trimming and removal. Uses all tools of the trade including; ladders, ropes, power chain saws, band saws, axes, shovels, chipper, block and tackle. Logs trees for cleaning operations.

Keeps tools sharp and in good repair. Responds to "after hours" emergency tree maintenance needs. Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates. Supports the overall City Organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials. Typical Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of tree trimming methods; general knowledge of tree surgery techniques and of the composition and use of common insecticides, fungicides and fertilizers; general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to operate a truck with a hydraulic boom; ability to use and care for ropes, climber hooks, riggings, saws, wood chipper and tools commonly used in tree trimming and felling operations; ability to climb trees and to work effectively in dangerous positions at considerable heights above the ground; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience working at heights, removing and trimming trees around high voltage power lines, preferable. Physical Requirements This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. Special Requirements Possession of Class "A" North Carolina commercial driver's license or ability to obtain within six months after hire.

Possession or the ability to obtain Line Clearance Tree Trimmer and First Aid and CPR certifications within six months after hire.
