Group: Land Surveying
Position: Crew Chief
Location: Columbus or Akron, OH
We are seeking an experienced and dependable Crew Chief to lead field survey operations within our Land Surveying Group. The Crew Chief is responsible for the successful execution and efficient completion of all field activities on assigned projects while ensuring quality, accuracy, and safety standards are upheld.
Responsibilities
  • Lead field survey crews in performing a wide range of surveying tasks including control establishment, boundary monument search, topographic/planimetric mapping, sewer structure measurements, and construction layout.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Project Surveyors, and engineering teams to understand project scope, field requirements, and deliverables.
  • Ensure all field activities-including vehicle operation, equipment setup, traffic control, and site interaction-are conducted safely and in compliance with company procedures.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the Field Team Leader regarding project schedules, weather-related work delays, and crew productivity.
  • Mentor and train Field Technicians in field procedures, safety practices, and data collection standards.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of field notes, measurements, and collected data.
  • Compile and download all project data from the crew and ensure the completeness of all files and documentation.
  • Complete the Field Crew Checklist as part of the data download process.
  • Maintain accurate and organized field records, sketches, and reports.
  • Regularly communicate boundary search results, field conditions, and encountered issues to Project Managers or Project Surveyors.
  • Ensure all crew members remain productive and safe during varying site and weather conditions.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of updated field procedures in collaboration with leadership.
  • Maintain company vehicles and equipment in good working condition and ensure proper use by the field crew.
  • Interact respectfully and professionally with clients, contractors, and the public at project sites.
  • Ensure client satisfaction through quality work, timely completion, and responsive communication.
  • Represent the firm in an ethical, courteous, and professional manner at all times.
  • Report field emergencies, injuries, or incidents promptly to the Field Team Leader or Group Leader after notifying emergency authorities when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of field surveying experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or technical coursework in surveying, civil engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Possession of or progress toward Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level II or higher preferred.
  • Strong understanding of survey instruments including GPS, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Ability to interpret survey plats, field sketches, and construction drawings.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to guide and mentor team members.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout Ohio to project sites, as needed
  • Valid driver's license
  • Experience with construction staking, boundary, and topographic surveys.
  • Familiarity with DOT, municipal, or land development surveying requirements.
  • Experience with Trimble, Leica, or similar survey equipment.
  • Knowledge of data transfer, file management, and field-to-office communication processes if preferred
