The Claims Superintendent, General Liability will have primary responsibility for the handling and oversight of high-exposure General Liability claims for an Excess and Surplus Lines carrier. This role will manage complex pending matters across a broad range of exposures, including Products Liability, Habitational Risks, Contractors (including, but not limited to, New York Labor Law), Liquor Liability and Large Property Damage Fire/Water Intrusion claims. The position requires close collaboration with defense counsel, internal stakeholders, and external partners to ensure effective claim outcomes, adherence to policy terms, and alignment with best practices for high-severity loss management.

  • Present facts of claims, with recommendations, to committee as necessary on General Liability claims.
  • Incorporate all claims into company records and review for applicability of coverage.
  • Prepare large loss reports where applicable.
  • Attend and participate in mediations/trials as necessary.
  • Establish appropriate loss and expense reserves. Maintain valid loss and expense reserves based on current investigation and legal discovery.
  • Supervise activities of Independent Adjusters, investigators and defense attorneys to ensure that all claims are appropriately handled.
  • Adhere to company procedures and Best Practice guidelines as well as case and statutory law requirements when coverage is in question, and/or when paying or denying claims.
  • Comply with reporting requirements of treaty and facultative reinsurers.
  • Maintain current understanding of various unfair claim practices statutes.
  • Incorporate all claims into company records and review for applicability of coverage.
  • Participate in broker relations calls/visits as needed.
  • Attend industry related seminar workshops and/or courses for continuing education.
  • Additional tasks assigned.

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive commercial insurance claims handling experience.
  • Focus on Commercial General Liability lines of business.
  • Ability to assess priorities and manage deadlines effectively.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Up to 20% travel.

  • Commercial General Liability claims expertise.
  • High-exposure claims handling and oversight.
  • Coverage analysis and interpretation.
  • Loss and expense reserve management.
  • Litigation management, including mediations and trials.
  • Supervision of Independent Adjusters, investigators, and defense counsel.
  • Reinsurance reporting compliance.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to assess priorities and manage deadlines effectively.
  • Knowledge of unfair claim practices statutes and applicable case and statutory law.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full-time regular employees which for this role includes:
Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000
The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
Eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
