In the news
The grocery industry was doing well before the coronavirus pandemic, adding 17 million square feet of selling space in 2018 and opening more stores than it was closing. Now, the coronavirus pandemic has further increased sales. For example, Kroger has seen demand grow 30% across all categories.
With restaurants closed, people are increasingly purchasing groceries and cooking at home. In cities like New York City, where 60% of spending on food took place at restaurants prior to the coronavirus outbreak, grocery stores are seeing purchases surge as much as 100%. Even after the economy reopens, grocery stores are likely to do well. Many Americans who have lost their jobs or seen their incomes fall will cut back on luxuries like restaurant meals in the coming months, delivering a further boost to their local grocery stores.
- Help Wanted: Grocery Stores, Pizza Chains, and Amazon Are Hiring– Amid a spike in demand, grocery stores have had to expand hiring to keep shelves stocked.
- A Coronavirus Bull Market for Groceries – The spike in demand for groceries has been particularly large in urban centers, where a substantial share of spending on food took place at restaurants before the coronavirus pandemic.
