What is space plasma physics?

A Space Plasma Physics job involves studying the behavior of charged particles in space environments, such as the solar wind, planetary magnetospheres, and interstellar plasmas. Scientists in this field use theoretical models, computer simulations, and data from satellites and space missions to understand plasma dynamics. Their work helps improve space weather predictions, protect satellites and astronauts, and advance fundamental plasma physics research.

What does a space plasma physicist do?

Daily responsibilities for a Space Plasma Physics professional often include analyzing observational data from satellites or space missions, developing and refining theoretical models, and collaborating with team members to interpret findings. You'll regularly write reports, prepare research papers for publication, and present your work at scientific conferences or internal meetings. Depending on the position, you may also participate in proposal writing for research funding and contribute to the development or calibration of space-based instruments. The role typically involves close collaboration with astrophysicists, engineers, and project scientists in a research-oriented environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed for space plasma physics?

To thrive in Space Plasma Physics, a strong background in physics or astrophysics, advanced mathematical skills, and a PhD or equivalent research experience are generally required. Proficiency with scientific programming languages (such as Python, MATLAB, or Fortran), data analysis software, and familiarity with satellite or spacecraft instrumentation are typical technical requirements. Effective collaboration, problem-solving abilities, and clear scientific communication are valued soft skills in this field. These competencies are essential for conducting high-level research, analyzing complex data, and contributing to international scientific teams exploring space environments.

How much do plasma physicists make?

Plasma physicists typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Those working in research or academia may earn less initially, while industry roles or government positions often offer higher compensation and additional benefits.

What careers use space plasma physics?

Careers in space plasma physics include research roles at government space agencies, universities, and research institutions, where scientists study the behavior of plasma in space environments. Professionals often work as space scientists, plasma physicists, or mission analysts, utilizing tools like satellite data and simulation software. These roles typically require advanced degrees and involve data analysis, modeling, and contributing to space exploration or satellite technology development.

Job description

Pulsed Power R&D Engineer
The Pulsed Power team is responsible for developing novel pulsed power technologies for use in space and on-earth. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Pulsed Power R&D Engineer who can rapidly iterate and develop novel pulsed power systems. The ideal candidate will thrive in a resource-constrained environment, capable of transforming vague inputs into functional prototypes through consistent logical questioning and experimentation. This role demands a proactive individual who is mission-focused, capable of working independently, and able to travel to the field when necessary.
Tasks:
  • Lead and apply cutting-edge pulsed power systems.
  • Rapidly design and iterate innovative prototypes.
  • Ensure safe and efficient lab testing and operations.
  • Oversee design specifications and documentation.
  • Conduct performance, lifetime, and safety testing.
  • Work hands-on in a resource and schedule-constrained environment.
  • Refine prototypes based on experimental results.
  • Perform LTspice modeling tasks.
  • Develop custom diagnostics from scratch.
  • Innovate with a logical, problem-solving approach.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to the team and stakeholders.
  • Drive technological improvements and collaborate across teams.
  • Experience in high voltage systems and components
  • Experience in electro-static simulations
  • Strong first-principles engineering fundamentals.
  • Expert understanding of pulsed power systems.
  • Background in plasma physics.
  • Basic domain knowledge including surface mount soldering, EMI protection of circuits, and control of circuits using Arduinos.
  • Basic understanding of solid state power components/circuits (e.g. switched mode power supply topologies, power transformers, capacitors, MOSFET's, thyristors) and integrated circuits.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, managers, and suppliers.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication and troubleshooting.
  • Excited to work in a startup company culture and atmosphere.
  • This position is located at Lunar Resources' facility in Houston, TX. Remote work is NOT possible for this position.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in designing and developing pulsed power systems.
  • Proficiency in LTSpice or similar circuit simulation tools.
