How much do sleep therapy jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for sleep therapy in the United States is $30.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.08 and $35.10 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is sleep therapy?

Sleep therapy is a range of treatments and techniques designed to help individuals overcome sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and other sleep-related issues. It can include behavioral therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), the use of medical devices such as CPAP machines for sleep apnea, medication management, and lifestyle modifications. Sleep therapists or specialists evaluate a person's sleep habits, diagnose underlying problems, and create personalized treatment plans to improve sleep quality and overall health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sleep therapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sleep Therapist, you need a background in respiratory therapy, sleep medicine, or polysomnography, often supported by certification such as RPSGT or CRT-SDS. Familiarity with sleep study equipment, CPAP/BiPAP devices, and diagnostic software is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to educate and reassure patients are crucial for success. These skills ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and positive patient outcomes in managing sleep disorders.

What are some common challenges sleep therapists face when working with clients, and how can they be addressed?

Sleep therapists often encounter challenges such as client adherence to treatment plans, varying underlying medical or psychological conditions, and the need to tailor behavioral interventions to individual lifestyles. Building strong therapeutic rapport, providing clear education about sleep hygiene, and collaborating closely with other healthcare professionals are key strategies to address these challenges. Additionally, ongoing professional development and supervision can help sleep therapists stay updated with best practices and improve client outcomes.

What is the difference between Sleep Therapy vs Sleep Technologist?

AspectSleep TherapySleep Technologist
CredentialsSleep Therapy programs, certifications, sometimes a background in healthcare or psychologyCertification through AAST or BRPT, healthcare background often preferred
Work EnvironmentClinics, sleep centers, hospitals, working with patients to improve sleep issuesSleep labs, hospitals, conducting sleep studies and monitoring patients overnight

Sleep Therapy focuses on providing treatment plans and behavioral interventions for sleep disorders, often involving counseling or therapy techniques. Sleep Technologists primarily conduct sleep studies, monitor patients during sleep, and collect data for diagnosis. While both roles work in sleep health, Sleep Therapy emphasizes treatment and patient management, whereas Sleep Technologists focus on technical data collection and analysis.

How much does a sleep therapist make?

Sleep therapists typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. They often work in healthcare or sleep clinics, utilizing tools like polysomnography equipment and requiring specialized training.

What degree do you need to be a sleep therapist?

To become a sleep therapist, a common requirement is a bachelor's degree in a health-related field such as psychology, nursing, or respiratory therapy. Additional certification or training in sleep medicine or polysomnography is often required or preferred, depending on the specific role and employer.

Job description

Description

Market Manager, Sleep: Ohio/Kentuckyย

(Columbus, OH preferred but can live anywhere in territory)ย

Build One of the Premier Sleep Markets in the Countryย

We are looking for high-performing sleep sales professionals who want more than another traditional DME territory.ย

This is an opportunity to build a major sleep market with a company focused on premium patient experience, operational execution, outcomes, and aggressive growth across CPAP therapy and sleep medicine.ย

If you are a top CPAP, HST, sleep diagnostics, pulmonary, or sleep therapy seller and have ever thought:ย

"I could build something much bigger." ย

"I'm underpaid for the business I generate." ย

"My company cannot operationally support large sleep accounts." ย

"Nobody in this industry executes consistently." ย

"I want real upside." ย

...this role was built for you.ย

The Opportunityย

The Ohio/Kentucky market offers a high-growth market with strong payer alignment and a dense base of high-volume sleep programs and referral sources. This role will build top-tier relationships and win large accounts. Pure hunting role focused on landing and scaling large, long-term accounts.ย

What You'll Doย

Develop and grow relationships with high-volume referring providers ย

Own and develop your territory like a business ย

Identify and close large CPAP and sleep therapy opportunities ย

Drive growth through operational excellence, service differentiation, and strategic partnerships ย

Conduct in-person and virtual field sales activity across the territory ย

Lead business reviews and performance discussions with provider partners ย

Partner internally with operations, clinical teams, and leadership to support account growth ย

Represent BetterNight at conferences, industry meetings, and provider events ย

Requirements

What We're Looking Forย

Proven sleep industry sellers who want to leverage their experience, relationships, and market knowledge to build enterprise-level sleep partnerships with uncapped income potential and no quota caps limiting earnings.ย

Ideal candidates may come from:ย

CPAP/DME sales ย

Home sleep testing ย

Sleep diagnostics ย

Pulmonary sales ย

Sleep therapy ย

Respiratory/DME leadership ย

Other products or services from the Sleep Provider industry ย

Top candidates typically have:ย

Existing sleep medicine relationships ย

Experience selling to specialists and large physician groups ย

A history of building business, not simply maintaining accounts ย

Strong field presence and executive communication skills ย

High urgency and competitive drive ย

The ability to operate independently while building strategic partnerships ย

Compensationย

Top performers should expect to significantly outperform traditional DME compensation models.ย

Competitive base salaryย

Uncapped commission structure with no quota cap limiting earningsย

Aggressive accelerator model designed to heavily reward high producers ย

Realistic earnings potential of $200K+ for successful market builders ย

Top performers can substantially exceed that levelย

Additional benefits include:ย

Medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) ย

Auto and phone allowance ย

Vacation and holidays ย

Career growth with a rapidly expanding national sleep company ย

ย About BetterNightย

Under the direction of proven executive leaders in the DME/sleep industry, we are looking to grow quickly and are investing heavily in people who have the skill set and motivation to succeed in building major sleep markets. ย
