Through bench research,clinical trials and the rigorous study of prevention and control,our scientists pursue the many roles of medicine in treating,preventing and controlling the adverse effects of cancer. Ourhallmark activity is translational research, where our physiciansand scientists work to bring laboratory discoveries to the patientbedside as quickly and safely as possible. Through our educationalprograms, our faculty train the next generation of scientists andphysicians to further advance science and practice.

Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU School of MedicineDivision of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Sickle CellDisease (SCD) Program Medical Director/Leader to oversee allclinical care of the SCD Program (i.e. IP, OP and infusionefforts), manage 15-18 staff, participate in governmentalpartnerships, relate to SCD programs around the state through theVA Dept of Health and represent VCU nationally as the SCDProgrammatic leader in respective societal efforts (i.e. TheAmerican Society for Hematology, The Alliance for Sickle CellDisease Centers, etc.) and maintain a clinical practice.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Teaching | Faculty member will train medical students, residentsand fellows. Expected to actively participate in providing clinicalresearch opportunities to fellows.
  • Research | This faculty member will be responsible for bringing the most innovative clinical trials in sickle cell disease to VCU and the region utilizing intra and extramural partnerships. Thisposition will be expected to establish extramural partnerships withthe ultimate goal of offering the most innovative drugs/treatmentsin sickle cell disease to patients at VCU before they are standardof care. Efforts to obtain funding for your research in areas offocus consistent with the mission of the School of Medicine and theDepartment must be demonstrated. In addition, reasonable scholarlyactivities, such as publications, presentations at nationalmeetings and participation in appropriate academic organizations,are expected.
  • Service | It is expected that the faculty member in this role willbe active in decreasing Health Disparities in the community servedby VCU.
  • Clinical | Provides care for patients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on sickle cell disease and attends on the inpatient wardsand/or consult service.
  • Administrative | Medical Director, Sickle Cell Program - willoversee all clinical care (i.e. IP, OP and infusion efforts),manage 15-18 staff, participate in governmental partnerships,relate to SCD programs around the state through the VA Dept ofHealth and represent VCU nationally as the SCD Programmatic leaderin respective societal efforts (i.e. The American Society forHematology, The Alliance for Sickle Cell Disease Centers,etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board certified or eligible in hematology
  • Eligible for Virginia medical license
  • Evidence of accomplishment/potential (e.g., publications, trialPI) during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/or earlyacademic career
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism, and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences,or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
