What is a metamaterial?

A Metamaterial job typically involves researching, designing, and developing advanced materials with engineered properties not found in nature. These materials manipulate electromagnetic waves, sound, or heat in novel ways for applications in industries like aerospace, telecommunications, and medical devices. Professionals in this field may work in R&D, material science, physics, or engineering roles, using simulation tools and fabrication techniques to create innovative solutions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a metamaterial position?

To thrive as a Metamaterial Engineer, you need an in-depth understanding of electromagnetic theory, advanced materials science, and nanofabrication techniques, typically supported by a degree in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering. Experience with simulation software such as COMSOL Multiphysics, CST Studio Suite, or MATLAB is frequently required, along with familiarity with laboratory instrumentation for characterization. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication skills make candidates stand out in this innovative field. These capabilities are essential for developing cutting-edge materials and effectively contributing to multidisciplinary research and product development teams.

What are some common challenges that metamaterial engineers face in their daily work?

Metamaterial Engineers often encounter challenges related to the complexity of designing new materials with unique electromagnetic properties, which requires both theoretical modeling and experimental validation. Translating conceptual designs into laboratory prototypes necessitates precision and creative problem-solving, especially when working with nanoscale fabrication and characterization techniques. Additionally, collaboration across physics, engineering, and manufacturing teams is vital, which can introduce communication and integration hurdles. However, overcoming these challenges offers the opportunity to contribute to breakthroughs in areas like telecommunications, optics, and aerospace, making the work both demanding and rewarding.

Job description

Staff RF Engineer Lead development of RF metamaterial coatings from concept to prototype for next‑generation sensors

Location: Fremont, California

Compensation: $155,200 - 232,800 USD / year

About The Role Staff RF Engineer

Lyten is leading an industrial revolution through Lyten 3D Graphene™, a breakthrough supermaterial unlocking a new generation of products — from lithium–sulfur batteries and energy storage systems to concrete admixtures, lightweight composites, and next‑generation sensors that are revolutionizing industries. Together, these innovations are making a massive global improvement and driving real‑world impact across energy, mobility, construction, and defense.

At Lyten, we believe the most meaningful careers begin with purpose — and with people who want to make a difference. We're not just developing advanced supermaterials — we're about to change the world as we know it, reshaping how energy is stored, how products are built, and how progress is made.

We're entering an exciting growth phase, scaling production across the U.S. and Europe and expanding our team of engineers, scientists, and innovators.

Apply now to join our team and be part of something bigger than yourself — where collaboration, creativity, and purpose come together to build the technologies that will define the next century.

Lyten seeks an experienced and motivated Staff RF Engineer to leverage physics and engineering knowledge to innovate solutions to national‑level challenges, driving these solutions from concept to final product utilizing novel meta‑surfaces and meta‑material structures. Requires experience in designing, producing and evaluating cutting‑edge advanced coatings. The selected candidate will invent new concepts, create theoretical models, perform cutting‑edge research to fabricate and characterize material needed to shape coating technologies, develop prototypes, and collect and present data to support proofs of concept.

This Staff RF Engineer will join a team of experimental staff members who are passionate about developing innovative solutions that can impact the future development and application of electromagnetic devices involving novel meta‑surface designs. With these teams, the selected candidate will leverage commercial computational tools to build simulations and develop numerical solutions for problems pertaining to the interaction of electromagnetic fields with novel meta‑surfaces and metamaterial structures with applications ranging from radio‑wave through optical frequencies; extend established design principles and optimization procedures into application domains with poorly defined behaviors or with extreme parameters that challenge the state of the art; lead research efforts through the establishment of collaborative and diverse teams, present results in an effective and timely fashion, and mentor early career staff; and work closely with Lyten team members to engage potential sponsors for the purpose of incubating new programs. Lyten is committed to scientific excellence and continuous improvement in an agile environment.
