What is climatology?

A climatology job involves studying weather patterns and long-term climate trends to understand Earth's climate system. Climatologists analyze historical data, develop models to predict future climate changes, and assess environmental impacts. They may work in research institutions, government agencies, or private organizations, providing insights on global warming, natural disasters, and sustainability. Their work helps shape policies for climate adaptation and mitigation.

What does a climatologist do?

A typical day for a climatologist involves collecting and analyzing large climate datasets, running computer simulations to predict weather patterns, and preparing detailed reports or presentations. You may collaborate closely with other scientists, government agencies, or environmental consultants to share findings and contribute expertise on climate impact projects. Fieldwork may also be necessary, such as monitoring weather stations or gathering samples, depending on your specific role and employer. Overall, the work blends research, data interpretation, and teamwork to address real-world environmental challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in climatology?

To thrive in climatology, you need a solid grounding in atmospheric sciences, data analysis, and statistical modeling, often supported by a degree in meteorology, environmental science, or a related field. Expertise in climate modeling software, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and programming languages such as Python or R is commonly required, and professional certifications can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are key soft skills for translating complex climate data into actionable insights. These abilities are vital for accurately studying climate patterns, forecasting trends, and informing policy or business decisions.

Do climatologists make good money?

Climatologists typically earn a median annual salary that is comparable to other environmental scientists, with salaries varying based on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals or those in senior roles can earn higher salaries, especially if working in government agencies, research institutions, or private consulting. Advanced skills in data analysis and modeling can also influence earning potential.

Is it hard to become a climatologist?

Becoming a climatologist typically requires a bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, or a related field, with many roles requiring a master's or Ph.D. for advanced research or academic positions. The path involves gaining strong skills in data analysis, computer modeling, and scientific research, which can take several years of education and experience.

What degree is needed to be a climatologist?

A climatologist typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climatology, or a related field. Many positions require a master's degree or Ph.D. for advanced research or academic roles, along with skills in data analysis and modeling tools.

Position Summary

Ares Management is seeking an experienced and hard‑working Climate Senior Associate to own and execute climate change initiatives in Ares’ investment platform and corporate operations. Based out of our NewYork office, the Climate Senior Associate will partner with internal stakeholders—including the Infrastructure ESG / Climate Strategy Lead, broader ESG team, investment teams, and global marketing teams—as well as portfolio companies and LPs to create value by implementing our firm‑wide climate strategy.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Partner with the Infrastructure ESG / Climate Strategy Lead to shape and operationalize Ares’ firm‑wide approach to decarbonization and climate risk management.
  • Engage day‑to‑day with Ares portfolio companies and assets across all business lines to advise leadership, identify value‑accretive decarbonization opportunities, and support execution of practical climate initiatives focused on operational improvements, risk mitigation, and long‑term value creation.
  • Coordinate Ares’ annual financed emissions footprint, including data collection, education/training, QA/QC, calculation, analysis, reporting, and management of software vendors (primarily Watershed and Novata).
  • Develop scalable tools to assist portfolio companies and assets in accelerating their decarbonization plans (e.g., playbooks, fact sheets, decks).
  • Support Ares’ external climate‑related reporting (e.g., TCFD reporting, LP requests).
  • Support investment professionals to better integrate climate risks and opportunities into the investment due diligence process.
  • Analyze climate‑related firm‑wide risks and work with relevant corporate functions to establish mitigating practices.
  • Serve as a go‑to internal expert on climate topics, providing clear recommendations and practical guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, including consultants, software providers, and sellers of environmental commodities such as RECs and offsets.
  • Perform research on a variety of climate topics, including peer efforts, frameworks/standards, regulation, and decarbonization strategies.
  • Support select operational and execution‑oriented tasks such as meeting coordination, note taking, event planning, responses to investor RFPs, and assistance to the Infrastructure ESG / Climate Strategy Lead and others with development of decks and documents.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in climate/ESG‑related business practices, investments, and sustainability, preferably within the financial services industry. Alternative asset‑management experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of climate and carbon—including emissions disclosure frameworks (e.g., TCFD), target‑setting methodologies (e.g., SBTi, NZAM), approaches to decarbonization, and management of physical and transition risks from climate change.
  • Technical knowledge and experience specifically in carbon accounting—including basic science, governing frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, PCAF), calculation methodologies, QA/QC, and reporting.
  • Ability to conduct advanced analysis in Excel as well as partner with software vendors to develop analysis (direct software development experience not required).
  • Demonstrated ability to toggle between strategic framing and technical/quantitative climate work, including translating complex issues for non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders with varying degrees of climate knowledge and ‘meet them where they are’ as it relates to incorporating climate initiatives.
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills—including ability to “influence without authority” in a multi‑stakeholder environment.
  • Demonstrated success in managing complex projects or pieces of projects in a matrixed organization and driving measurable results.
  • General knowledge of the finance and investment sector, private markets, and corporate operations.
  • Strong networking and relationship‑building skills with external parties.
  • Strategic thinker with an ability to work independently and proactively; keen eye for detail as well as the ability to focus and drive towards the bigger picture.
  • Sharp presentation skills, meeting facilitation, interpersonal decision making, consensus building, and collaboration ease.
Compensation

Base salary range: $160,000 – $180,000 per annum. Total compensation may also include a discretionary performance‑based bonus.
