What is beauty packaging?

Beauty packaging refers to the design, development, and production of containers and materials used to store, protect, and display cosmetic and personal care products such as makeup, skincare, haircare, and fragrances. This packaging not only preserves product integrity and safety but also plays a crucial role in branding and consumer appeal. Beauty packaging professionals work with materials like glass, plastic, and paper to create functional, attractive, and sustainable solutions that meet market trends and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in beauty packaging, and why are they important?

To thrive in Beauty Packaging, you generally need a background in packaging design, materials science, and familiarity with industry standards, often supported by a degree in design, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and knowledge of sustainable packaging technologies are typically required. Strong project management, creativity, and communication skills set standout candidates apart in collaborating with cross-functional teams and clients. These skills ensure the creation of innovative, functional, and visually appealing packaging that meets brand objectives and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced in a beauty packaging role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in beauty packaging often encounter challenges such as ensuring product compatibility with packaging materials, balancing innovative design with cost and sustainability demands, and meeting strict regulatory requirements. Working closely with product development, marketing, and regulatory teams is essential to address these issues effectively. Staying updated on industry trends and sustainability standards, as well as fostering strong supplier relationships, can help overcome these challenges and lead to successful packaging solutions.

SKIMS is a solutions-oriented brand creating the next generation of products designed to elevate everyday essentials. Built at the intersection of culture, innovation, and design, SKIMS has redefined categories through a commitment to exceptional product, thoughtful functionality, and a distinct, globally recognized aesthetic.

As we expand into Beauty, we are building a category that brings the same level of innovation, intention, and design excellence to beauty products and experiences. We are looking for exceptional creative talent to help establish and evolve the visual and physical identity of SKIMS Beauty.

Role Overview

SKIMS Beauty is seeking a highly creative and technically skilled Senior Packaging Designer to help shape and execute the packaging vision across our growing beauty portfolio.

This role will be responsible for developing elevated, innovative, and highly functional packaging across primary and secondary packaging, translating the SKIMS aesthetic into a distinctive beauty experience. The Senior Packaging Designer will work across concept development, design, prototyping, and production, partnering closely with Creative, Product Development, Marketing, Operations, and external vendors.

The ideal candidate combines exceptional taste and design sensibility with a strong understanding of beauty packaging construction, materials, manufacturing, and production. This person is highly detail-oriented, solutions-driven, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment where multiple products and launches are moving simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

Packaging Design & Concept Development

  • Develop innovative packaging concepts across SKIMS Beauty, including primary packaging, secondary packaging, sets, gifting, promotional packaging, and special projects.
  • Translate the SKIMS brand identity into a distinctive and cohesive packaging language for Beauty.
  • Create concepts from initial ideation and sketching through detailed design development, mock-ups, and final production.
  • Explore form, material, color, finish, typography, graphics, and functionality to create elevated and recognizable packaging.
  • Balance creativity and innovation with functionality, commercial viability, cost, sustainability, and production requirements.
  • Create compelling presentations, renderings, and prototypes to effectively communicate design concepts to senior leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Maintain consistency across the portfolio while continuing to evolve and elevate the SKIMS Beauty packaging identity.

Technical Development & Production

  • Translate creative concepts into technically viable packaging solutions, with a strong understanding of materials, construction, decoration techniques, and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and manage dielines, mechanical files, artwork, specifications, and production-ready files.
  • Review prototypes, samples, color proofs, materials, finishes, and production submissions to ensure execution meets the original creative vision.
  • Partner closely with Product Development and Packaging Development to troubleshoot technical challenges and identify creative solutions.
  • Understand the opportunities and limitations associated with components including glass, plastics, metals, paper, cartons, labels, closures, pumps, applicators, and other beauty packaging formats.
  • Maintain exceptional attention to detail throughout development and production.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Creative, Product Development, Brand Marketing, Operations, Sourcing, and Production throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with external packaging suppliers, manufacturers, agencies, and production partners to deliver exceptional results.
  • Work within established timelines, budgets, and launch calendars while maintaining a high creative standard.
  • Participate in design reviews and confidently present concepts, recommendations, and solutions to senior leadership.
  • Respond quickly to feedback and evolving business priorities while protecting the integrity of the overall design vision.

Innovation & Brand Evolution

  • Stay informed on emerging beauty packaging, materials, manufacturing technologies, sustainability innovations, and broader cultural and design trends.
  • Continually identify opportunities to improve the consumer experience through packaging innovation, functionality, and design.
  • Explore new materials, finishes, structures, and production techniques that can differentiate SKIMS Beauty within the global beauty landscape.
  • Contribute to the development of packaging guidelines and systems that create consistency as the Beauty business scales.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • 6+ years of packaging design experience, ideally within beauty, cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, luxury, fashion, or a highly design-driven consumer brand.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating sophisticated packaging design, concept development, structural thinking, and production execution.
  • Demonstrated experience designing both primary and secondary packaging.
  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, print production, finishes, and decoration techniques.
  • Experience taking packaging from initial creative concept through development, sampling, and final production.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Experience with 3D design, rendering, or visualization software is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of typography, color, composition, materials, and physical product design.
  • Experience partnering directly with packaging developers, suppliers, manufacturers, and production teams.
  • Beauty industry experience and knowledge of beauty packaging components and manufacturing processes strongly preferred.

Skills & Attributes

  • Exceptional creative taste and a highly refined design sensibility.
  • Deep appreciation for the SKIMS aesthetic and the ability to translate it authentically into Beauty.
  • Highly detail-oriented with an uncompromising commitment to quality.
  • Strong conceptual thinker who can also execute at a highly technical level.
  • Commercially minded and able to balance creative ambition with cost, timing, scalability, and manufacturing realities.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Strong communicator who can clearly articulate creative rationale and confidently present to senior leadership.
