What is the difference between Zfs Storage vs Network Storage Engineer?

AspectZfs StorageNetwork Storage Engineer
Primary FocusManaging ZFS file systems and storage poolsDesigning, implementing, and maintaining network-based storage solutions
Required SkillsZFS administration, storage management, data integrityNetwork protocols, SAN/NAS systems, storage networking
CertificationsNone specific, often Linux or storage certificationsCCNA, Cisco Storage certifications, CompTIA Storage+
Work EnvironmentData centers, server rooms, enterprise storage environmentsData centers, network operations centers, enterprise IT

While Zfs Storage specialists focus on managing ZFS-based storage systems, Network Storage Engineers design and maintain networked storage solutions like SANs and NAS. Both roles require storage knowledge, but Zfs Storage is more about filesystem management, whereas Network Storage Engineers focus on network infrastructure for storage. Understanding both can be beneficial for comprehensive storage management in enterprise environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ZFS Storage Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a ZFS Storage Administrator, you need a solid understanding of storage concepts, file systems, and Unix/Linux system administration, often supported by relevant IT or computer science qualifications. Familiarity with ZFS commands, shell scripting, backup solutions, and monitoring tools like Nagios or Prometheus is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure optimal data integrity, efficient storage management, and quick resolution of technical issues in enterprise environments.

What is a ZFS Storage Administrator?

A ZFS Storage Administrator is an IT professional who specializes in managing, maintaining, and optimizing storage systems that use the ZFS file system. ZFS (Zettabyte File System) is known for its advanced features like data integrity verification, high storage capacity, snapshots, and efficient data compression. Administrators are responsible for tasks such as configuring storage pools, monitoring system health, performing backups and restores, and troubleshooting performance issues. Their role is critical in environments where data reliability and scalability are essential, such as enterprise servers and data centers.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing ZFS Storage systems, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in managing ZFS Storage systems is ensuring optimal performance while maintaining data integrity, especially as storage needs scale. Professionals often need to monitor resource usage closely and fine-tune configurations such as cache settings and pool structures. Dealing with hardware failures and planning for redundancy using ZFS features like snapshots and replication is also crucial. Collaboration with network and systems administrators is typical to ensure seamless integration with other infrastructure components. Staying updated with ZFS best practices and regularly testing backup and recovery processes can help address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Position Summary
Samsung, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, is founded on a simple philosophy - the endless pursuit of excellence will create a better world for all. At Samsung Austin Research and Development Center (SARC) and Advanced Computing Lab (ACL), we are building a center of excellence for Intellectual Property (IP) that is applied to high-performance computing devices (mobile, automotive, and other custom market segments) consumed by millions of people around the world. Come build with us!
Role and Responsibilities
As a Senior Staff Storage Engineer, you will serve as the deepest technical authority for the storage infrastructure powering our Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments. Your work will directly influence engineering productivity, regression efficiency, and time-to-results across large-scale GPU and system-level IP development programs.
In this high-impact individual contributor role, you will own the architecture, scalability, and performance strategy for NetApp ONTAP and Linux-based storage infrastructure, supporting thousands of compute clients and petabyte-scale environments. You will partner closely with CAD, silicon design, infrastructure, and SRE teams to drive storage architecture decisions, improve operational efficiency, and deliver scalable, resilient infrastructure for critical engineering workloads.
  • Lead the multi-year architecture, scalability, and capacity roadmap for NetApp ONTAP, StorageGRID, and enterprise storage infrastructure supporting EDA and HPC workloads.
  • Drive technical direction across petabyte-scale NFS environments, including performance optimization, resilience, cost efficiency, Linux filesystem tuning, and hybrid-cloud storage capabilities using AWS FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Azure NetApp Files, and FabricPool-integrated object storage solutions.
  • Architect, deploy, and support enterprise-scale storage platforms and replication topologies, including ONTAP clusters (FAS, AFF, ASA), FlexGroup, SnapMirror, FabricPool, StorageGRID, and multi-site replication environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex end-to-end performance and operational issues spanning EDA applications, Linux NFS clients, networking, ONTAP internals, monitoring frameworks, and distributed compute environments while advancing automation using Python, Ansible, Terraform, and ONTAP REST APIs.
  • Provide technical leadership across the organization by mentoring engineers, leading design and architecture reviews, driving root-cause analysis for critical incidents, and influencing infrastructure strategy across CAD, infrastructure, SRE, and silicon engineering teams.

Skills and Qualifications
  • 11+ years of experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or 9+ years with a Master's Degree, or 7+ years with a Ph.D.
  • 11+ years of enterprise storage engineering experience, including 5+ years directly supporting large-scale EDA and HPC environments
  • Expert-level experience with NetApp ONTAP, including FlexGroup, SnapMirror, FabricPool, QoS, performance analysis, and ONTAP REST API automation.
  • Deep expertise in Linux filesystems and NFS environments, including XFS, ZFS, ext4, NFSv3/NFSv4 tuning, and Linux performance troubleshooting using kernel traces, nfsiostat, and SystemTap / eBPF / perf output
  • Strong understanding of EDA and HPC workload characteristics, including RTL simulation, formal verification, physical design, and DFT environments
  • Strong automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) experience using Python, Ansible, Terraform, and API-driven tooling
  • Demonstrated experience defining storage architecture, scalability, and operational strategy for large-scale enterprise environments supporting petabytes, thousands of clients, 24x7 operations
  • Strong experience with NFS-on-Linux environments, identity integration (LDAP, Active Directory, automount), and complex enterprise storage escalations
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to engage senior leadership and guide teams through ambiguity in a fast-paced, global environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • In-depth expertise in StorageGRID
  • Experience with parallel filesystems such as Lustre, GPFS / IBM Spectrum Scale, or BeeGFS
  • Experience with hybrid-cloud storage environments, including AWS FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Azure NetApp Files, and S3 tiering via FabricPool
  • Familiarity with enterprise backup and recovery platforms such as CommVault, NetBackup, or Networker
  • Experience with VMware storage integration and virtualization environments
  • Familiarity with EDA workload managers such as LSF, Slurm, or Grid Engine
  • Experience contributing to open-source storage or filesystem tooling
  • NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA), RHCE, VCP, or related advanced NetApp certification
