What is YouTube monetization?

YouTube monetization refers to the process by which content creators earn money from their videos on the YouTube platform. This is typically achieved through the YouTube Partner Program, which allows creators to place ads on their videos, receive channel memberships, and benefit from features like Super Chat and YouTube Premium revenue. To qualify, creators must meet certain requirements, such as having at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months. Once eligible, creators can enable monetization features and start earning income based on video views, engagement, and ad performance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing YouTube monetization for creators or channels?

One of the main challenges in YouTube monetization roles is keeping up with frequent platform policy changes and algorithm updates, which can impact revenue streams and content eligibility. Professionals must also navigate demonetization issues, copyright claims, and advertiser requirements to ensure channels remain in good standing. Balancing content optimization for both audience engagement and advertiser suitability often requires close collaboration with content creators, editors, and marketing teams. Staying proactive and maintaining open communication with YouTube support and partners is crucial for resolving issues quickly and maximizing earnings potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a YouTube monetization specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a YouTube Monetization Specialist, you need expertise in digital marketing, content strategy, and a deep understanding of YouTube's monetization policies, typically supported by experience in online video platforms. Familiarity with YouTube Analytics, Google AdSense, SEO tools, and copyright management systems is essential. Creativity, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you optimize content performance and build audience engagement. These skills ensure creators maximize revenue, comply with platform guidelines, and grow sustainable channels.

Job description

Be Part of What's Next

Help shape the next generation of advertising solutions at Hearst Magazines. Reporting to the SVP, Sales, you'll lead the strategy and revenue growth behind some of our most dynamic opportunities across video, social, and event sponsorships-turning emerging formats, evolving platforms, and standout brand experiences into scalable opportunities for advertisers and Hearst.

About Hearst Magazines (Why Us?)

Hearst Magazines' portfolio of 30 iconic brands in the U.S.-including Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper's BAZAAR, and Popular Mechanics-inspires, entertains, and builds new and bold experiences for an engaged and growing audience across digital, video, social, and print. With sophisticated content creation, cutting-edge technology, and industry-leading data capabilities, we make media and products that move people across all platforms. We are a global media company that publishes magazine editions and websites around the world-and together, we are shaping what's next.

Key Responsibilities (What You Are Doing)

  • Own and execute Hearst Magazines' sales strategies for video, social, and event sponsorships, with accountability for overall revenue targets and channel-specific goals.
  • Drive revenue growth across YouTube, social video, onsite video, and branded content while identifying and developing opportunities across CTV, streaming/OTT, programmatic video, and emerging formats.
  • Lead sponsorship strategy for Hearst brand tentpoles, franchise events, summits, and member experiences, partnering with Events Marketing and other stakeholders to maximize sponsorship and related revenue opportunities.
  • Serve as the organization's sales subject-matter expert for video, social, and events, equipping sellers with market intelligence, compelling narratives, playbooks, training, and strategic deal support while advising on platform-informed strategies across YouTube, Meta, TikTok, X, and other relevant platforms.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Revenue Operations, Media Strategy, Video Production, Ad Product, Editorial, and other teams to develop, package, price, position, and continuously evolve solutions based on advertiser needs, platform developments, and performance insights.
  • Originate, advance, and close strategic, high-value opportunities, joining sellers in priority client and agency conversations and building executive-level relationships with brands, agencies, platforms, and partners to unlock incremental investment.
  • Hire, lead, and develop two event sellers focused on long-tail sponsorship opportunities, establishing clear goals, operating rhythms, and performance expectations while coordinating their efforts with the broader sales organization.
  • Manage and communicate a strong pipeline and forecast, monitoring performance against goals, identifying opportunities and barriers, representing Hearst Magazines at relevant industry events, and bringing marketplace feedback into the organization to inform future products, capabilities, measurement, and investment.

Qualifications (What We're Looking For)

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in digital media, advertising sales, sales strategy, or a related field, with significant expertise in video and a strong understanding of YouTube and social monetization and advertising solutions.
  • Deep knowledge of social video and major platforms, including Meta, TikTok, and X, as well as onsite video, branded content, CTV/OTT, streaming, and programmatic video.
  • Proven success developing and championing new advertising products, sales narratives, or go-to-market strategies and translating innovation into measurable revenue growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry and achieve revenue targets, originate and close complex deals, and influence a broader sales organization without direct reporting authority.
  • Strong player-coach leadership style with the ability to align cross-functional stakeholders, establish priorities, and drive decisions in a large, matrixed organization.
  • People-management experience with demonstrated ability to hire, coach, motivate, and develop high-performing sellers.
  • Credibility with senior brand and agency decision-makers, paired with exceptional communication, presentation, and public-speaking skills and the ability to make complex products and market dynamics clear and compelling.
  • Strategic and analytical commercial judgment, strong forecasting discipline, and the ability to balance near-term revenue delivery with long-term capability building; willingness to travel for client and agency meetings, team engagements, and relevant industry events. This role is based in New York City and requires working in the office four days per week.

Benefits (What We Offer)

  • Work with the Best: Collaborate with top-tier professionals across media, advertising, tech, fashion, lifestyle, and publishing, shaping the future of these dynamic industries.
  • Grow Your Skills: Unlock your potential with access to innovative training programs, immersive workshops, and exclusive industry events.
  • Work-Life Harmony: Enjoy the flexibility of hybrid work, empowering you to balance professional success with personal priorities.
  • Foster Connection & Belonging: Join our Employee Resource Groups and help create a welcoming workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered.
  • Wellness First: Prioritize your well-being with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance from Day 1.
  • Plan for Your Financial Future: Enjoy competitive financial perks, including a 401(k) plan with a generous company match.

The base salary range for this role is $249,000-$270,000. This role is also eligible for bonus and/or commission compensation. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
