Job description

The Arc of Ocean County is seeking a motivated and supportive Teaching Assistant to assist students participating in our Summer Transition Program. This role works closely with the Summer Camp Instructor and program staff to provide academic, social, vocational, and independent living support to transition-aged youth in classroom, campus, and community settings.

This position is ideal for someone passionate about education, accessibility, and helping young adults build the skills necessary for future success in college, employment, and independent living.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Support the Summer Camp Instructor with classroom instruction, group activities, and student participation both on campus and within community-based settings.
  • Assist students during individual and small-group learning activities.
  • Encourage the development of academic, workplace readiness, social interaction, and independent living skills.
  • Provide support with assistive technology, Braille materials, and other accessible educational tools as needed.
  • Assist with career preparation activities including resume development, interview preparation, workplace communication, and professional conduct.
  • Help adapt and prepare instructional materials into accessible formats such as large print, Braille, tactile graphics, and digital resources.
  • Support students during campus navigation, transportation activities, and community outings.
  • Assist with monitoring student participation and documenting progress under the direction of program leadership.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with instructors, supervisors, families, staff members, and community partners to promote positive student outcomes.
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and additional program-related activities.

Requirements

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Candidates currently pursuing a degree in Special Education, Visual Impairment Studies, Education, Human Services, or a related field are strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting transition-aged youth or young adults preferred.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license in good standing required, with no more than five (5) points.
  • Must be able to successfully complete and maintain all required criminal background checks, Central Registry checks, CARI screenings, and drug testing requirements.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while demonstrating professionalism, flexibility, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must be committed to promoting independence, self-confidence, and self-determination among students.
