Yield Analysis Engineer information

What is a yield analysis engineer?

Yield Analysis Engineers are professionals who focus on analyzing and improving the manufacturing yield of products, particularly in industries like semiconductor fabrication. They collect and interpret process data to identify patterns, root causes of yield loss, and opportunities for process optimization. Their work helps companies maximize production efficiency and minimize defects, ultimately reducing costs and increasing profitability. Yield Analysis Engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and process engineering, to implement solutions that improve yield.

How does a yield analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to address manufacturing issues?

Yield Analysis Engineers regularly work alongside process engineers, product engineers, and quality assurance teams to identify and resolve manufacturing bottlenecks or defects. They analyze data from production lines, share findings with relevant teams, and participate in root cause analyses to implement corrective actions. This collaborative approach ensures that yield improvements are based on comprehensive insights and that solutions are effectively integrated into existing workflows. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential in this role, as addressing yield challenges often requires input from multiple technical disciplines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a yield analysis engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Yield Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor manufacturing, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with statistical analysis tools (like JMP or Minitab), data visualization software, and familiarity with yield management systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing manufacturing processes, reducing defects, and ensuring high product yield in a competitive semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Yield Analysis Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectYield Analysis EngineerProcess Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing and improving manufacturing yields through data analysisDesigning, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsData analysis, statistical tools, engineering fundamentalsProcess design, engineering principles, certifications like Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, data analysis teamsProduction floors, process development departments

While both roles are integral to manufacturing, Yield Analysis Engineers focus on analyzing yield data to identify issues and improve output, whereas Process Engineers develop and optimize manufacturing processes. Both roles require strong analytical skills and engineering knowledge, often working closely to enhance production efficiency.

How much does a yield analysis engineer make?

A yield analysis engineer typically earns between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries. The role often requires knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes and data analysis tools.

Job description

Overview

Failure analysis laboratory process engineer in Fayetteville, AR. Individual will provide support for customer returns, new product introduction and continual improvement for Wolfspeed SiC-based MOSFETs and Schottky diode die, discretes, and power modules, and customer-built power modules. Perform electrical testing, nondestructive imaging, deprocessing, cross section and fault location to identify root cause of failure and collaborate with teams to drive solutions. Individual will also manage a small team of technicians.

Responsibilities
  • Perform physical failure analysis processes on customer returns, new product introduction, product/process changes, yield enhancement and continual improvement for Wolfspeed SiC-based MOSFETs and Schottky diode die, discretes, and power modules, and customer-built power modules.
  • Handsโ€‘on electrical testing, nondestructive imaging (cโ€‘mode scanning acoustic microscopy (CSAM)), chemical deโ€‘processing, crossโ€‘section / polishing, fault location (hotspot thermal imaging), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to identify root cause of failure.
  • Partner with Wolfspeed Fayetteville and external failure analysis labs as capability and capacity require.
  • Write summary physical failure analysis summaries for contributing to failure analysis engineers performing root cause investigations, for customer or internal use, that elucidate the root cause of failure and may suggest possible solutions.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams to drive improvements.
  • Develop electrical test, chemical deโ€‘processing, CSAM cross-section/polishing processes and write controlled document procedures.
  • Support lab chemical hygiene and waste disposal, safety, ESD prevention, 5S, tool ownership, and best practices.
  • Manage lab techniciansโ€™ day-to-day activities while managing customer priority requests.
  • Train and work with lab technicians and engineers and collaborate Durham and Fayetteville failure analysis teams.

This role may require additional duties and/or assignments as designated by management.

Qualifications
  • 4-year degree or better in physics, chemistry, materials science or engineering (electrical, chemical or materials) or related field.
  • Working knowledge of semiconductor process technology and device functionality.
  • Great soft skills including technical writing, verbal communication, technical presentations, critical thinking, multiโ€‘tasking, flexibility with rapidly changing priorities, collaborating with remote teams, sense of urgency, accountability and ownership.
  • Able to work in the lab in close proximity with others and be on your feet for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Comfortable performing chemical, mechanical and high voltage electrical processes.
Preferred Experience
  • 2+ yearsโ€™ handsโ€‘on experience in electrical component failure analysis including techniques such as CSAM, hotspot, deโ€‘processing (chemical, laser and/or plasma), mechanical cross section / polish, SEM and EDX (alternatively, experience with similar processes in wafer fabrication or packaging facility, or for cleaning or etching, may also be beneficial).
  • 2+ yearsโ€™ handsโ€‘on experience or at least working knowledge in microโ€‘electronic semiconductor devices and assembly/packaging (discretes and power modules).
  • Chemical handling and general laboratory procedures.
  • Handsโ€‘on electrical testing of semiconductor device components such as MOSFETs and Schottky diodes; SiC highly preferred.
  • Supervisory or project leadership experience.
